intresting idea, but does it work?

http://www.dendroboard.com/phpBB2/vi...237&highlight=

I came across this post on another forum, the gist of their idea is to take a huge aquarium, section part of it off as a food culture growing area, and having the rest of the tank as a vivarium for dart frogs. They divided areas of compost off with palm fiber mats and added cultures of ants, fruit flies, and other small insects. The idea is that the food can breed in the compost culture and then move out into the vivarium as frog food, but the frogs cant get into the compost themselves. They claim it is a complete ecosystem and that because of it they never have to feed their frogs. It seems like an intresting idea, but I dont think it would work. What are your ideas on the subject?

It seems like a neat idea. But you think it would smell a bit funky? Esp. a nice hot and humid summer day

in the proper vivarium set up wnt most feeders breed themselves
laying eggs in substrate and such?
a good substrate should have some leaf litter in it anyhow.

if you read the whole thing he explains how the compost doesnt smell. also the original one that he built worked but the second one he built didnt the frogs were looking skinny so he took them out he figured that the compost area wasnt big enough. not all feeders lay there eggs in substrate he added fruit in the compost for the fruit flies and the whole point of this vivarium was to make an area for the feeders to breed without predators.
