heat lamp/ heat pad for custom cage???

Building a custom cage 4ft x 2ft x 2ft. Just wondering whether or not the heat produced from a heat lamp will go through glass and if the heat produced by the heat pad will go through wood??? Any info will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Either way it's not an efficient way of getting heat into the enclosure. Ideally the lamp should radaite heat directly into the enclosure but screened off so nothing gets fried on it. If the enclosure is built with 2x2 wood framing, you can put in styrofoam in the bottom cavity and cover with 1/4" plywood. That will insulate the bottom from the cold and retain heat from the warmed substrate by the lamp longer.

I built one too. What I decided to do, is cut 2 pieces of wood, and put them in the cage front to back. This is on 1/3 of one side of the cage. Then put a piece of glass ontop, then slap on a heat pad under the glass inside the cage, place the glass down, and drill a hole or two for air circulation under the glass at the back of the cage. Hope this gives you an idea for your cage, it will work great with a lamp dimmer.
