Very Dissapointed with the TO Zoo

:medmustac

Hey all,

I got the opportunity to go to the TO Zoo this weekend...I havent been in probably 15 years and I was soo excited to finally being going again...

I spent all afternoon roaming around the Savanna and Canadian side (I didn't get to the Americas side...its just sooo big) and had a great time checking out all the beautiful animals and especially various herps... It was really close to closing time and I was upset that I didn't get the chance to go to the Australia building...so my wife cinvinced me to run through it quickly before they locked up....
It was soo great to see the Komods, Crocs and Roo's...BUT much to my dissapintment the Bearded Dragons looked absolutley horrible....The one that I could see best was soo sick that it looked almost dead...there was bubbles of puss coming out if its nostrils and it was barely skin and bones...it also had the yellow skin disease and its eyes were badly infected ....the other wasn't alert and was at the rear of th enclosure but the body looked to be a bit larger that the closer one...We approached the guy that was walking through to lock up and he just brushed us off and said that "the vets are on top of these things daily"....I really don't understand whay they would have sick animals on display like that...it must be stressful enough to be that sick, let alone be on display for thousands of ppl to see every day.... I would hope that my $19 entry fee and $8 parking fee goes to helping those beardies....

At least take them off display and get some healthy animals to show...

Just had to vent,...thanx
Cheers

Sad to hear, and not too un-common. What "Some Zoo's" need are people who actually know what there doing....

Ours isnt that bad...all the reptiles appear healthy and happy, but...who knows.

If you think thats bad, then you dont want to visit the Edmonton Zoo........their beardies are healthy but everything else is in bad shape.... so sad. I was talking to one of the reptile keepers there, and im 99% sure I knew more than she did!

Our Zoo here in our smalle town of Peterborough is expaning slowly , admission is FREE .. the tax payers pay for it as the Utilities commission owns it .. anyhow they added alot more reptiles this year , a colony or plated lizards , a pair of tortoises , red foot I believe , a columbian boa and a spotted python and they already had a burmese python for the last few years .. and they all looked good . oh and a ball .. my only problem is that they are housing some of these together .. the ball is in with the colony of plated lizards I believe the spotted is in with the tortoises .. man ..

I don't know our zoo is pretty hurtin'.
The snake pit area is alright (kinda hard to see the snakes though)
The big boa enclosure is pretty ugly in my opinion.
some of it is just tanks suck behind glass. ( setups are usually filthy)
You can go to a local pet shop and see everything but the boas.
But lets not get on the topic of our pet shops. lol

Yup it is..the displays are horrible.
If what I hear is correct...we wont even have a zoo anymore...

Funding sucks here.....displays sucks. Yet they still get "new" animals....go broke..then sell them.

No more panda's from China....elephants are gone. But apparently we aquired a lion?lol

ya two lions apperantly the female was pregnant and they didnt even know it.

I don't know who they have in charge of the zoo but they need a slap in the face.

We don't get any funding or anything because nothing has changed at the zoo for over 20 years. It all the same lazy looking animals in their small pathetic enclosures. You walk for miles just to get from one area to the other.
They used the space they have very poorly. The set-up is completely all over the place.

The probleme is we spend to much money on stupid bridges and junk we don't need in our city. I willl not hisitate to move if things don't start turning around.
