Importing Boas from the US

I have never had a snake shipped to me from the US, and I am just wondering, how extensive is the paperwork / wait time to have a Surinam Boa shipped to Canada?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

It is not to bad for you the buyer, it is the guy in the states that will have to do all the paper work. The seller has to apply for a Cites permit, and the wait can be anywhere from 2 to 6 months maybe even longer. Plus as far as i have heard the Cites fee has gone up. Before the snake is shipped it must be inspected by the U.S. fish and wildlife. Then the snake will be on it's way to you. In order to pick the snake up at the airport, you must first pick up the paper work from the cargohold where your snake is, and then go to the customs office, and pay your duty, and gst. And customs can be a real pain in the @ss. They will ask you all sorts of questions. Once customs stamps your papers you may go back to the cargo place to pick your snake up.

I just recently got a snake from the states, and i was lucky, Cites only took 2 months for my snake. Customs well thats a whole other story.

Anyway, if it is an animal you really want i would get it, but if it is something you can find here in canada, i would go that route.

If its a unique Surinam, then indeed get it via Cites and the long wait as mentioned before. Otherwise buy Canadian, there are a few redtail breeders. Being your in Vancouver check out Henry Piorun at:

Goodluck with your search.

I'm actually attempting to get a nice ATB from the US as we speak, it's a CITES Appendix II animal meaning I don't need an import license, but this guy needs a CITES export permit.

In my opinion, you'll know if it's worth it or not. I've seen ATB's in canada compared to them in the US and to me it was no contest.

But I did thoroughly search canada first haha
