Unknown Egg Found in House Plant

Hey Everyone,

My brother found this egg in a house plant of his. The house plant is tropical, but my best guess is that it was farmed in Canada. This egg was found on the top of the soil much to his surprise, as it wasn't previously there (maybe the water flushed it up?).

The shell is hard, and about the size of a Cadbury Mini-Egg (this is no Easter joke). The soil he is using is Miracale Grow Soil.

Any guesses? Answers?

Let me know what you think.

Steve
(p.s. it was still moving when the shell was opened, which is interesting)

Thats funny, and a solid guess, i'll keep it in mind.

I've also already had it suggested that it may be a velocaraptor??

RD Exotics,

Anole was one of my guesses after lots of thought. However how would an anole egg get in there? Also, did that anole have a hard shell?

Thanks,
Steve

Wow what are the chances of that, how did it survive? with no incubation or anything, or being transported

LOL, it could pass as a velocaraptor.

I would say a species of anole aswell except for that tail. It throws me off. I have seen quite a few hatchling and hatches with anoles, and the tail looks nothing like that, or from those photographs it doesnt. The second picture makes it look like it has a beak, and more of a pointed head than a hatchling anole. Picture one and two look like a totally different species. But from the first picture i would have to say an anole.

Do anoles have hard shelled eggs, or leathery?

It looks Avian to me. In the second pic it appears to me to be a beak. From the frontal view it appears to be very conicle. The lateral view of the second pic fits the overall profile for beak of a small passerine species of bird. The size of the egg also suggests an avian species to me.

The head appears to be very well developed with rather large eyes to be reptillian. However the abdonimal area is white and slightly transparent appearing to be extremely underdeveloped. Which leads me to belive that what appears to be a tail is actually not a tail, but simply a very underdeveloped body. The body also appears to be "fuzy" with makes me think feather follicles. Although it could simply be the amnion giving that appearance.

It is really hard to guess though. hhhhmmm.

Just my thoughts, If will be interesting to see that bad boy up close when you come to guelph next....steal it from your bro and will can get a real close look at it, without the shell remnants on it.

So I asked where the plant was from.

Apparently it was purchased from IKEA. From what I know IKEA plants are produced in Canada, that is the tropical plants are farmed.
