Hi, I've owned a rough green snake for two months. S/he (Johnny)'s about 28 inches long, very thin, somewhat shy, and loves crickets. Problem: Johnny managed to escape his terrarium the day before yesterday, and I don't know how to find him. Anyone have any ideas?

I don't know anything about rough green snakes but from what I've heard...most escaped snakes are found hiding close to where it escaped. Check the room where it's kept very thouroughly.

There's a few tricks people use.
Sprinkle flour around the floor (right at the walls) and across the door openings and watch for tracks, set up a red light over a rock and hope he's looking for a warm spot, put a whack of crickets in his tank and put it on the floor so he can get at it.
Basicly try to give him something he wants/needs in a place you can monitor.

I lost a green snake in my old house 2 summers ago. It was gone for about 2 months. It shot out from under the couch one day and was bigger than it was when lost! Keep your hopes up as these guys are pretty tough snakes and can survive on there own.

Hope you find your snake, it must be quite stressful to see it gone from it's enclosure and trying to find it. I wish I could help but I don't know the species very well.

Hey Jill.. and welcome, have a tried and true plan for you, a few years back I lost a baby Python.. in an unfinished house.. was somewhere in the walls I thought, I searched the net and tried the flour.. and all sorts of scented traps to no avail.. So.. just for a Ha.. I took a few rolls of very thin scotch tape and laid it around all appliances (warm spots) furniture doorways etc. most will travel along close to the wall . just before dark as most snakes travel about during the night.. just lay it sticky side up.. I lay in bed to read for a few hours and got up with a flashlight for a quick peek every hour or so.. 3rd time there was a trail of tape leading to a very sheepish looking Ball Python.. covered in tape and huge dust bunnies but no worse for wear.. a couple years back I put this up on Kingsnake and got a lot of Emails from people saying it worked for them.. hope it helps and good luck...

Thanks to everyone who helped me with this. I tried just about everything, was getting to the tape option when my eleven and six-year-old found Johnny (the green snake) in the bookcase about four feet from his tank. So after a week on the run (all the way to the bookcase), Johnny is safe and sound back in his habitat. Thank goodness, maybe now he'll eat those crickets and we won't have to listen to them all night!
So Big Mike's advice was right. I thought I thoroughly searched that room, but honestly I didn't pull every book out of the bookcase. Next time (if there is one, I sure hope not), I will.
