Red Belly

Hey all-

Hmmm. The belly of my male BRB is a pinkish red color and has been since before his shed about a week and a half ago. The belly of his shed even has a red hue to it.

Does this sound familiar to anyone or like anything to worry about? I keep him at the same specs as my female and she has a bright white tummy.

Their cage temps are 85.6 hot side, 76-78 ambient (cool) side and humidity goes up and down between 70-95% with mistings...

Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks,
Brent Strande

My BRB's belly will turn red at night and back to white during the day. I have also heard that other folks have had things like that happen as well.

I've never seen red like that on my own or any Brazilian...usually the bellies I see are grey/white. Thats some AMAZING colouration though

Hope it's not some freak skin disease

don't think that its a disease, too constant...

Perhaps his stomach is upset as I have been heavily misting lately and perhaps too wet (yes even for a BRB!!!)

I'm pulling at straws here Brent, but perhaps you are right, and from over misting or....friction with the damp substrate or some other reason, it looks like his belly may be a little raw. I have no idea what to do about it tho. Hopefully someone else can pipe up some input.

Wow, that is weird. I've produced hundreds of them and never seen that, other than with microbial skin infections.
Watch it closely and if the scutes start to crinckle and become wavy,or the outer layer starts to slough off, you probably have an infection.
It doesn't look infected right now, in fact it looks fantastic but that is certainly rare pigmentation if it's normal and lasts.

Uh oh, it could be a case of dermatitus (scale rot). I would keep a very close eye on that. If it develops into dermatitus, get betadine ointment to apply daily and move him to a sparse enclosure with paper towel substrate and a plastic hide, and no water dish. I think thats about it. It could just be strange coloration, but I don't know your snake. Let me know if you have any questions.

I FIGURED IT OUT...

... I think!!!

I was taking out his papers today (substrate) and have been using a bunch of the same issue, and somehow noticed that one of the inside pages has a bright red advertisement! Well, half of the ink was missing on each issue of the paper. I believe that when he was crawling between the layers of paper, the ink rubbed off on his belly!

Hopefully that is all that this is. I should know soon as he is opaque again and will be shedding soon!

Thanks for all the idea and suggestions!
