Some gtp advice needed.

Hello all,

After much weighing up the pro's and cons i am thinking of buying a (my first) GTP.

The dilemma i have is as follows, the young beast that i may have the option of aqquiring is indeed very young (but it is cbb). In fact it may not even be quite 2 months old. Now all the research i have done has left me with the conclusion that such a young animal will be a somewhat risky purchase.

What i would like to ask those of of you who have kept such animals, just how tricky is a very young GTP to raise?

Just how fragile (not in the physical sense, but in an immune-system-poor-dying of-RI's sort of way).

I wouldent say its tricky.. just takes a little more care..Make sure before you get it that you test temps and humidy to see if you can keep the cage at what the young gtp is going to need...

a lil tip for that young of a gtp is to make it easy to remove the perch..when they are very young as you may be geting...it if very easy to damage there spine..

dont feed it to much...Do all the research you can.. and Humidity..and temp.. is the key when keeping a gtp..

Maybe its just my fault, maybe he is stressed because of the 2 hour trip to me, i don't know. I do know i didnt espect this. I serously handle him like he is a ticking bomb (like walking on my toe's when im in the room where he is in and such) but still he does not want to eat.

I was in the same position as you were. You want the snake so badly, you want it asap. But I advise you, if you want to get a young one, buy him and ask the breeder if you can pick it up after a month. Then he's 3 months old, still very young but - assuming it currently eats well - will build up just a little more reserve than he has now. If he gets at your place and doesnt want to eat for a while, he can have it better than when he is younger.
A month more waiting isnt that much really Of course you can also do 2 months or 1,5 month...

And of course, make sure you have the perfect enviroment set up before getting him.


I've heard of people who got their chondro and fed them with succes the very same day... those excist too so its a little matter of luck too....

very good advice..

I aquired 2 chondros one about a month old and the other was pretty much a week old .. they both were crazy feeders.. the one i kept til this day eats 3 to 5 mice a feeding every 4-5 dyas.. (I just got him 3 month ago..

I guess its a matter of luck and proper enviroment..

It is definitely a risk, so think about it. If it is not properly established you may spend a lot of time working with it to get it to eat. If it is your first chondro, I'd recommend trying to buy an established, 10-20 meals already, chondro. Its really up to you, there is a chance you will spend a ton of effort getting it to eat. Think about it and make the decision.
