bites

Ok long story short I was bitten by a Mangrove Monitor this weekend he was about 10-12 inches snout to vent and I'm wondering if I need anything special for shots etc. Note do not need tetnus. He/she hung on for a few minutes before I had to rip my thumb out of the mouth (had a dinner I had to go to) it didnt really hurt it was kinda like a small papercut type of pain but has it ever bruised. quick little bugger. oh well he was fun to hold until he got pissed off. Please no flamers, I admit it wasn't the brightest idea and lesson learned.

hey there

The little brats can do a number on the fingers and thumbs. I like to keep a spray bottle of vinegar handy whenever Ryan or I are working with a potential biter, or any large snake. Vinegar in the mouth of a reptile that is latching on will make it let go, almost immediately. It also brings you into a realm of pain sensation second to none, to pour or spray the vinegar into the open wound in the process. Usually the wound bleeds freely, reducing the need for flushing it profusely, but it is a good idea to watch it for the slightest hint of infection, swelling or redness and throbbing sensation. Seek medical attention promptly if you experience any irritation at all.

Good luck with the monitor, they are great little creatures to keep and grow up. With time, you should develop quite the relationship.
