Its great to see a lot of Canadian people acquiring all these beautiful Blacks these days!
I wouldn't doubt that in a few years, we will be seeing some nice unrelated F1's for sale.

Here's a pair i recently acquired, and judging by there size, they will be ready to breed this upcoming season without a doubt.

Sooo...if im lucky, ill be able to supply some much needed females to a couple of our members here with some awesome lonely males. (you know who you are!!)

Hey Grant - I've always liked any snake with orange eyes. Those are nice. Good luck next breeding season.

Two questions: Is it my imagination or do they look cocked and ready to fire in those photos? How's their temperments? And, do you use lots of that long-strand sphagnum moss in your cages normally as a substrate, or just in part of the cages?

Joan, They are somewhat ready to fire in those pics... i moved them under the light to get a nice shot of them as they were buried underneath the spag.
So there was a little unsettling on my part.
Usually, the male is fine, however, he huffs and puffs when getting picked up.
The female on the other hand, has a tendency to strike when bothered and something is in direct firing range...

I have only had them for a ferw months.. and they were not imports....or atleast they have been LTC since they were babies.
Either way, there temperments are better then most borneos and reds.

as for the substrate. its something ive started playing with just recently.
Originally, I was using newspaper in the visions with some of the vents covered. ..but found myself spraying a lot and still did not have a good amount of ventilation.
So i switched to alot of ventilation and alot of spag (the whole cage, ho hides).
So far, this has worked great. holds humidity well, and the heat panels dry up the warm side leaving the cool side still damp. eventually it all dries up and i spray again.

I must say the heat panels are great at this!

I have noticed more thermoregulation and activity in the last week then the last month.
They really seem to enjoy peeking there heads out.

Its cheap, looks good, holds humidity well, so i thought i would try it out.
Plus, its easy in a vision cage. If i was still using melamine cages...i wouldn't be so quick to use it.

Blacks are commonly found in higher arid regions of Western – South Western parts of Sumatra and its surrounding islands.
Where as Red (or yellow, brown, orange) bloods are native to Southeastern Asia, from Vietnam to Peninsular Malaysia, and on the eastern portion of Sumatra. Both blacks and bloods, typically, are seperated by a range of mountains down the center of the island..
they can also be found on various islands off the coast of there respective sides.

I also use sphagnum for all of my bloods throughout their whole enclosures, and it works like a charm. Never do I have problems with dry scales or unhappy bloods.

Hey grant and invictus, I know I've talked to invictus before on this subject but... My sumatran borgersmai has been staying out of her hide more often than not lately. I keep a warm wet washcloth in her glass tank, and she burrows under it. I keep her in a large breeder tank on reptile felt as a substrate,and a large waterdish. I've been considering using sphagnum moss lately as she seems to prefer burrowing rather than going in her hide. How deep do you guys keep it? How often do you have to change it? Any special tips on the stuff would help. I used to keep her moist box full of sphagnum moss but she would get it in everything. But since she doesn't crap often, and seems to urinate in her waterdish anyway, the moss bedding seems to be just as easy as the felt.. I have no problems with humidity, and she does great in a temp gradient of 80-86, it just seems she's begging to bury herself! Thanks guys!
