Small Abrasion...

While i was misting neo this morning i noticed a very small (maybe) abrasion. It looks a little red like it could be a cut or maybe like a fresh bruise under the skin. I tried getting a close look at it, but Neo and all his pissyness wouldn't really let me. He's still gripping great with that hand, my finger had a few little holes to prove it, and it doesn't appear to hurt him in any way. He also just started the shed process a few days ago, he's shedding on the hands and just starting on the tail and legs. I'm going to keep a very close eye on it to make sure there's no infection sitting in. I'm leary with using polysporin on it just because it's the underneth of his foot and he will be walking all over the cage. Is there anything else i can do or do you think it will start to heal on it's own. If i do notice an infection he will go to the vet right away, i don't play around with that stuff. I'm still new with him and want to make sure i'm doing it right cause i love this pissy guy sooooooo much!!!

Before i forget i've been wanting to mention this for awhile now. Neo is just so absolutly AMAZING!!! I can see why people don't stop at one cham... Every day is like a new day working with him, the more i do it the more i'm understanding him and his needs, and the more i'm amazed at these wonderful herps. I could just sit there for hours watching him bask in his favorite spot, hanging upside down on his verticle branch then holding on with his tail and hind legs and stand strait out (horizontaly) and start reaching for another branch. Watching him be all sneaky with his food (he still won't eat in front of me, but i sneaked a peek a few times). And all those wonderful lunges and nips he takes at my hand when trying to mist him or refill his food dish. Ok enough from me, but if you can help with any info i should do with his foot i would be very appreciative. Thanks in advance.

Jamie

It's on the underneth of his front foot (i belive it to be the right foot). It's very close to the middle where it bends on the bottom of the foot, that's why i'm leary to put polysporin on it. I don't want him tracking polysporin everywere. LOL I'm probly worring over nothing, but with all his past problems (previous owner) I stress over the little things.

I'm still tring to look for the cause of it, but i'm not quite sure how he did it. The only thing it could be is his food dishes but i never see him walk on them. Don't know i'll keep a close eye on it and wait and see if i can find out how he did it in the first place.

Thanks Collide

Jamie

I've had luck with betadine and cotton swabs for things like this. It's not an ointment, so tracking wouldn't be too big of an issue. Plus, it's cheap and easy to find. Hope this helps

Thanks betsy jean i always have betadine (for my boyfriend nipple rings) LOL. I didn't know it was safe for chams, do i have to worry about rinsing it off or him injesting it.

I've used it on Shirley and have'nt had a problem, so I wouldn't worry about injestion. I would just apply it in between mistings, that way you'll give it a chance to work it's magic, then rinse it off during the next spraying. And if you use a Q-Tip, the cage isn't getting doused with betadine.

Jamie: You should look around the cage for anything pokey. Things to look for might be the ends of ties that keep the sticks together, edges of the cage that may have a point to them, the ends of sticks.......try to find the source so it dosen't happen again. Let us know what you find.
I was thinking - maybe before you use betadine on your cham, you should call your local reptile vet and make sure it is safe for them. Or maybe they can suggest an alternative that may be more affective in this case. I would just want to be completely sure before going ahead with self-treatments.
Good luck and keep us updated. One of the chams that came to me has that on his foot. Its always been there. I've never treated it and it dosen't go away.

Corina- Thanks for the advice, I've been scowering that cage for possibilities. I've came to 3 conclusions, 1.It could be the branches on the ficus (i just trimmed them not to long ago) but he's never on them and none of them are small and sharp enough. 2. his food and water dish, i have no clue how just speculation. 3. He poked himself with his long nails from the other foot, I do catch him quite abit with one foot on the other. I'm still looking for any possibility of how this happened. I'll let you know what i find out.

I also just got off the phone with my vet. He told me to use peroxide then rinse it off after a few mins, then apply polysporin, and for me not to worry about him tracking it through the cage because if he injests it, it won't harm him. So i guess that's what i'm going to do. Thanks for eveyones help. I'll let you guys know in a week or so how it heals.

I guess i'll give everone an update on neo. I found out he had another spot just like the one pictured above, on his other foot. I came to the conclusion it HAD to be the ficus tree. So this weekend i took it out and went shopping for a new tree/plant. I found a good tall sturdy plant for him that was only 5 bucks, so i was pretty happy, and he seems to enjoy it (it starts with sh but i can't remember how to spell it). Anyway his feet are starting to heal very well and i hope it was the ficus, because the problem would be solved then. Oh and before i put the new plant in his home i let him take a nice long shower with it (he's shedding). Neo turned the most beautiful colors i have ever seen, he mostly stays brown during the day and a pretty green at night.

Thanks again for eveyones help

Jamie

Well, hopefully you have solved the problem. Has his wound been responding to the polysporin at all? Does it look any better.
Sounds like neo is getting a bit more comfortable with you, he's lucky to have you.

Just wanted to say that they are all cleared up now so the ficus was the culpret (good thing i got rid of it). I don't even think all of it phased him except for the fact that I had to invade his space a little more often, that boy doesn't like anyone in HIS space.
