you can't sex a bp accurately without a probe. you can make a guess by looking at the tail...female bps have shorter, stubbier tales while males have longer ones that sometimes bulge a little bit right below the vent. Supposedly, males' spurs are also bigger. if the sex of the snake is important (i.e., if you are buying one for breeding purposes) just get it sexed, since it's 100x more reliable. Also, most vets will sex snakes for free when you go in for a checkup.

You need a probe. There is no diference between a male and female's tail shape, spur size or anything to go upon that is 100%accurate, they all have short stubby tails with spurs.

Those red things are the Hemiphenes... which means it is a male. That's what "popping" is.

I see.....*shrugs* thats why I take them somewhere. I would get all confused if I tried it myself. How old do they have to be to do "popping"???

Place one thumb perpendicular to the cloaca, just in front of the vent. Then starting about 10-15 scales back gently roll your thumb towards the vent. Roll, don't push and be gentle. This should only be done to snakes a few weeks old as older snakes have developed enough muscle control that they can hold them in and you may damage them. You can also injure the tail if you squeeze too hard. It takes a bit of practice but just be gentle.
Cheers,
Trevor
