Hello from Ohio :)
Hello my name is Amber and I am from ohio. I just got a baby kenyan sand boa the other night so I thought id join a forum if I have any questions. I just fed the little thing a pinky which it took with no problems haha. Just wanted to introduce myself! And wanted to see if anyone might lead me to some pictures of some KSB setups so I can get a bit of an example that would be great  . I have him in a 5 gal(just to start off with, gonna move it to a 10 gal) aspin bedding, and a heat lamp on a dimmer. I also read they use UTH's so im looking into getting one of them asap

Hi there, welcome to the forum!! You are going to love your new Kenyan, they are a great snake to own 
I would definitely get a UTH, and make sure it's attached to a thermostat, and also would get rid of the heat lamp when you do get the UTH, as they benefit more from the belly heat. My setups are quite simple, Aspen bedding, a water bowl, and i also offer them a humid hide, filled with damp spaghnum moss.

How would I go about making a humid hide? And what substraights could I use in it? I could pick up some moss too if need be
Also, it stays a bit cool right now(ohio weather sucks lol) so what would a good air temp be? Or is it OK as long as the belly heat it the proper temp?

That's why im here! I always try to make sure I do everything right to spoil my pets(my leopard gecko as well as the mice lol). I got a 2.2 mice to start a small breeding colony just to feed one snake lol. I figure I can start selling them cheap on craigslist if I get too bombarded with little mice

For the humid hide, you can use either a deli cup, or similar plastic container, and either create a hole in the side of the container and leave the top on the container, or leave the top off. I use sphagnum moss, which you can get at petsmart, as the substrate for the humid hide, and i spray it down til it's damp, not soaking wet, but damp.
The room i have my snakes is is at 76 degrees, and they do fine with the belly heat, which is kept at 95-96 degrees. I live in Massachusetts, so i totally understand about the cold weather

Yep my first baby lol. I know how addicting they can be(I fell in love with leopard geckos after getting just one.. It dosnt stay one for long haha)

This may be a stupid question, but why don't you use sand for a kenyan sand boa? I'm sure its not for risk of impaction, just curious. Maybe its an aesthetic thing ?

Some sand, like washed play sand is fine, but if it's calci sand or the repti sand,that stuff is crap. It's dusty as heck, and it sticks to the snake if the snake gets wet, so i would avoid that particular sand. I prefer aspen as it's easy to clean and it holds a burrow...

Ah ok makes sense, when I buy sand for my fish tanks I usually rinse it a few times and dump out what doesnt sink to the bottom and it gets rid of whatever dust/powder was in there. Do kenyans need burrows? How do they make them in the wild? I'm guessing the sand gets moist as you go deeper or something?
