Wild monitors I encountered!

Just wanted to show off what I experienced walking in the park in Malaysia my last trip, a wild monitor lizard walking next to me! No idea what kind it is, probably not even documented.

Here's a video and some pics. I saw numerous other types just all over the place in the city, in the sewers, in the park etc.. Oh and one swimming in the ocean near the beach... Wait also a 1 foot long monitor in my parents back yard hiding in the brick hole!!! It was a yellow one but it bolted as soon as I went to take a photo

but I can't find all the pics of all the monitors I took there so here's a few

Re: Wild monitors I encountered!

Hi, that`s a beautiful Varanus bengalensis (Bengal monitor), not available to the pet trade these days. This is mine from some years ago when they were legally available. They can get to 150 to 180cm ToL.

The other one is a Varanus salvator (macromaculatus?), the Asian water monitor.

Yep, a very nice bengalensis. I would love to see some wild monitors, I'm very envious.

Out of curiosity why are the Bengal monitors no longer available in the pet trade? They are beautiful varanids.

Hi, they are currently listed on CITES as appendix1, in some parts of their range they are quite common, in others the populations are thought to be decreasing.

Re: Wild monitors I encountered!

yeah I saw so in awe when I saw that dood walking in the park.. he was pretty smart, he acted like he wasn't scared, but as soon as he got to the part of a drainage system where he knew I couldn't get him, he darted into the bottom of the covering, I can almost hear him say "haha I got you good!"

But that was one nice monitor with great physic! The ones near the ocean are always shedding, but are huge, people there don't even care about them, they treat them like crows or something haha.
