choked

my burm went with us to the pet store to visit our friends who have never seen him. he rode around my daughter a while, we let a customer hold him, and then he rode around on my shoulders for a long time, and was quite warm and relaxed acting. i have seen him agitated and he was far from it to my best estimation. he wrapped loosely once around my neck and was nosing down my collar trying to get in my shirt like always. we were watching the animones eat and i thought, "wow it is kinda hot in here." but i kept on watching with my kids and hubby was in back room getting mice for JCP. all of a sudden, i got kinda dizzy and i must be weird cuz i didnt realize he was constricting me soooo slowly until i couldnt turn my neck and he was fast around it in about four coils.
i had to call hubby to help me get him off. never did that before. was he scared and i coudlnt tell it? or is that normal for them to do that? it was real slow so that i didnt realize it until i started wondering why i felt so hot and confined, lol. does that make sense or am i not explaining it well? lol

I don't want to say "told ya so" but thats why you shouldn't keep big boids around your neck. My guess.... is... Your neck holds many HUGe veins.. which is pumping blood that is 98.6 degrees F. Just as snakes would coil around a heat lamp or a light bulb it coiled around your neck for the heat. I don't even like to put my ball python around my neck. If it wanted to hurt you, you wouldn't be alive right now, so i don't think it was that. back in my early teenage days i was FU**** up! and i would go to the websites that had pics of dead bodies, and i remember a pic of a guy who killed himself by slicing his throat.. there are HUGE veins right below the skin ... touch ur neck/throat then ur arm lets say .. it's like a 10 degree difference...

All I'm going to say is that it's probably best if you leave you reptiles at home next time you go out!

yeah that makes sense. but he is just a baby, that is why i did it. he is like 3-5 months old and not any bigger than my 2 year old JCP who has never done that. guess he is big enough now not to do that anymore.
and what a f***ed up way to kill yourself! lol

we dont usually take them anywhere. this was a special circumstance that the pet store owner wanted to handle the animal. they are just getting into this. we took him in a pillow case and he was fine. we take them about once a year to the school where i work, in a pillow case and carry a small tank with us. we dont make a habbit of taking them, and the pet store was five minutes from closing.

He was simply holding on and looking for warmth .. although u took em' out of his enclosure where he felt safe .. whatever would of happened to you, is not the snakes fault..

He is 3-5 month old and you could not get him off? I can't imagine what u will do when he is 6 feet or even 12 or 18!

Like correy said, better to leave him at home and if you have to show him to someone, make them come and see u and not the snake come and see them .. less stresfull on the lil' guys.

Just my though

if your friends cant come to the house to see them then pictures are worth a thousand words and i think a pet shop would be the last place you would see me take a burm .

i did not say it was the snake's fault. i could have gotten him off. i did not want to try and then hurt him. he is about four feet long. i am not a novice snake owner, nor novice pet owner. i am also not an idiot. i could have gotten him off even if i had been alone. i did not wish to pry the baby from where he was. and i am not stupid enough to take him around other animals he would have wanted to eat. geez.

I simply replied to the information you stated.. I was not implying by any means that u are a novice keeper or an idiot .. I was simply stating the fact that this event could of easilly been prevented if the snake was left at home.

On an other note .. Even if you would of put a live rat right in front of him in the pet store - he would not of eaten it .. being out of his secure home, he would of been too stressed to even think about feeding. These are just observations that I have seen on hundreds of other snakes.

Sorry if you misunderstood me

Which is why I said in my other post that 6ft+ should not be handled when you are alone. Even a 4ft burm is alot stronger than you realize. I'm glad that you are Ok, I take my snakes to schools for science classes, but I always just put the burm over one shoulder, she is over 8ft, and I take a friend so I have some help.
