Exclamation Preventing Mold??

I just discovered this greenish-grey mold stuff growing on the Aspen bedding under my BP's water dish (he seems to have spilled some without my knowledge...)

I grabbed what I could out of his cage and threw it in the garbage, my nose stuffed up and now I have lung pain (bad mold allergy here)...hoping that goes away soon...

Anyway, I don't want to move him since he just ate today, but once his meal is digested I will be replacing ALL bedding and washing the tub, I don't want him getting an RI.

How do I prevent this from happening in the future? Water dish with steeper sides? More ventilation holes?

Re: Preventing Mold??

I would change out the aspen bedding to something like repti bark or go bio active. Aspen is know to mold quickly.

Re: Preventing Mold??

Just need to use a base like cypress that is meant to hold the humidity that royals need.

Where in the world do I buy Cypress? Don't know if I've ever seen it here. Reptibark I have seen.

Re: Preventing Mold??

I use aspen bedding and have for 32 years. Get a water bowel that the snake can not spill the water on the bedding. If the bedding gets wet remove it right away. Most any bedding will mold if it gets wet and there is no air flow threw it.

Re: Preventing Mold??

I had the same exact problem! I switched to a mix of reptibark and ecoearth it works fine for me. Before that I used cypress mulch that worked better but I can no longer afford it. My girlfriend however uses aspen with a heavy rock water dish and has had no problems .

Re: Preventing Mold??

Reptibark wont mold in the same situation, i even overfill water bowls intentionally to aid humidity. I also use it with my GTP and at 90% humidity - no mold
