Scared for my boa
My grandmother came to visit and so I decided to board the snakes at a local herp shop so she doesnt have to fear the house. The shop has watched our animals before and always does a great job; however, I noticed my female boa is acting strange. She doesnt grip to you, she just kinda slides off of everything. Her body weight is more than fine and she seems to be gaining weight rather than losing any. She also holds her head up a lot, and not like its an RI. When she is slithering around and she "bumps" into something it seems to surprise the hell out of her and she jerks back into an S coil. I CANNOT bring her home while my nana is here and I cannot afford for her to leave because we leave for europe soon and I wont see her for probably 2 years until we come back to the states. I am absolutely TERRIFIED for my snake. She was acting fine a few days ago when I went to go see her. But now she just acts all lethargic even though she is eating and the temps seem fine. My main fear is my male boa is in with her and IDK if he is safe or what. He acts like his normal ole self but I have asked them to separate them until I can get her to a vet on monday hopefully :/
What do I do? Is she ok? I think I may just cry if shes not.

She shed not even 4 weeks ago and looks and feels like she is going into another shed. I never see her go into blue because shes albino and for what ever reason I never see her eyes get cloudy but she sheds just fine. The place is pretty nice, its clean and they do twice daily maintenance. They send me pictures and such and they sent me a video and ask that I come see her this morning. It just happened over night.
They are in a 4x2x3 snake set up, its like those pvc cages but white and textured like a paddleboat. Temps are 75 at night, 75 on the cool end and 90 on the hot side. humidity is around 55 to 60 but they get misted twice a day. They are on ?aspen? bedding.

Re: Scared for my boa
Looking up or stargazing can be a sign of IBD. I wouldn't freak out just yet but watch a few videos on youtube of snakes with IBD and see if this matches your snakes behavior. If yes and you have other snakes DO NOT BRING THIS ONE BACK HOME. IBD is 100% fatal and transmitable. Sorry.

What will I do with her? That means I cannot bring either home as they were kept together for breeding. What do I do?

Stargazing is also caused by many other things, usually when a snake is stargazing from IBD they can't eat either.

Re: Scared for my boa
Well since it has happened so fast I highly doubt she acquired it there at the pet shop.

Its like one day she was fine and the next not. Its not her first time being boarded there we also boarded her a while back when we were making them their set ups but we've never had an issue in the past other than my CWD male rubbing his nose some. Could it be something she ingested or exposed to?

Re: Scared for my boa
Well if it happened that fast I doubt its IBD. Boas can live for a while with IBD. Other snakes die fast.

It could be from some sort of chemical exposure. I had a customer accuse me if selling her frozen rodent that gave her boas ibd. What really happened is she kills two of her snakes with bleach.

yMy point was this snake may have had this awhile. Also ibd can drop a boa pretty fast once it shows signs.

So could it be something in their water dish? Maybe something in the bedding? I didnt provide the bedding or cage they are in while being boarded.

Boa's are asymptomatic carriers of IBD,they can carry it around their whole lives and never get sick,or they can start to show symptoms right out of nowhere...
i know pythons die within 4 weeks of showing signs of IBD,but i DON'T know how long a boa can go,after signs manifest themselves
IBD is incurable and imo its always best to euthinise at the first signs of a confirmed case,as it spreads quite efficiantly
cheers shaun
