I've just bought a red tail boa,

Hello I have my lovely royal and I been wanting a boa so I bought a red tail boa for my 4 ft viv that I have made. I did all my research on the boas but wondering what size to build my next viv as she is already 5 ft I was thinking 6ft high by 6ft wide and 3ft deep, is that big enough to last her full life, if so what heat lamp shall I use for that size? Is a 200 watt bulb on a thermostat ok? What else shall I put in it? i.e branch to crawl up I have a large dog bowl but shall I use a sink bowl for its water. Sorry for all the questions,

Re: I've just bought a red tail boa,

I use both a dog bowl and a washing up bowl.. Both are suitable. Is it a bcc or a bci? A true red tail will get bigger than bci, also feeding sizes and patterns change between bcc and bci.

I would say if she is already 5ft build as big of an enclosure as you can female boas can get 8ft and up depending on the species or mix of species

Put a photo up n I'll tell you.. The markings are different.. One tip is the saddles on the back, if they have a bat wing look to them it's bcc.. Normal saddles is bci.

You have lots to consider when planning out caging requirements for boas. As a general rule you can house boas for life in 4ft x 2ft x 1 ft. Others will argue there is not enough space. Understanding basic snake physiology and you can make a generalized formation of what cage your snake needs. I believe as long as there is enough space for the snake to thermoregulate and is able to stretch out it should be fine. The leingth plus depth sum should be equal or greater than the snakes leingth. IE 4 ft long x 2 foot deep is sufficient fo a 6 foot snake. Boas dont require alot of over head room like say a cobra does so heigth isnt such a big issue. Heigth actually has cons such as adding to total air volumn thus making it harder to control temperature and humidity. Hope this helps. Google search Boahpile plastics and give Jeff a call. Im sure he would be able to answer your questions.
