ceramic heat emitters....

Just wondering -- do the ceramic heat emitter bulbs need to be in a special fixture, or can they be put into a regular dome lamp fixture with an appropriate wattage rating?

It should be in a ceramic fixture. As long as you do that you will be fine. You should also have it on a dimmer switch or a rheostat to control the temperature output.

as greg said regular dome fixture will be fine as long as the socket is ceramic, which almost all of the commercial dome lamps are.

Be careful with the ceramic bulbs.....they are great for heating but they get extremely hot. On the 60 watt bulbs they get over 450F as a surface temp.......the 250 watt bulbs got well over 666F (as that is as high as my temp gun goes).

Wow... that's super hot. I'll have to think about that one... sounds like even if there were a cage over the bulb preventing the critter from physically touching it, the cage itself would probably get really hot too...

yup, it does get really hot. Also be careful when misting your cage, if you spray water directly on the CHE while it is turned on, there is a chance that it may crack. I believe that this applies to high wattage light bulbs too.

These are my old burm cages. I was looking through my photo archive to try and find good pics of the caging I had around the light/ceramic bulbs. This is the best pic I could find. At the far end is a 250 watt ceramic, in the middle was a 100 watt white light and at the end was a 100 watt black light. The caging around the 250 watt ceramic bulb were made to the specs that came along with the bulb. I think it was about 2 feet down from the top and about 18" across........I would have made it smaller than that though.

If I find a better pic I'll post it. The pic was taken on Dec 10, 1999.

andrea, those ultraviolet black lights sold at novelty stores etc. are bad for herps (and us too).
