ANOTHER feeding question
So, there is NO WAY mum will have rats in her freezer and there is no way I'm allowed to buy a freezer for myself. I need to feed my python large rats now but they 28 bucks each! I'm giving him quail more than rats cos of the price of the rat,BUT, would it be ok to buy 3 small rats for 20 buks and just give him all 3 instead of just one large rat? The 3 small rats combined would be just as big as the large rat, but would it be a good idea? Oh and iv searched around for rat breeders and I can't find any nearby

Re: ANOTHER feeding question
If you have a garage buy a mini freezer and put it in there. Doesn't really matter about pray size, as long as it's enough for his size......

Re: ANOTHER feeding question
You shouldn't have bought a snake that eats rats then, selfish in my books.

How the heck am I being selfish??
Being selfish would be NOT giving him ANY rats, but I am forking over my money to keep him healthy but I was just CHECKING to see if there was a cheaper but also safe option! I shouldn't have bought a snake that eats rats?? Well I couldn't find one that eats bananas!

Ha ha ha. Bannanas!
Look man I am sure that there is a solution here. Why not try explaining to your mother that if you could buy a small freezer for cheap that wouldn't effect your electric bill that much, and compare how much money you would save buying rats in bulk vice individual at feed times.
If that absolutely won't work then try to make friends with someone who has a rat colony. You help them buy buying the food and they hopefully will help you by giving you some rats here and there.

Lol I did explain to mum bout how the freezer won't take up much electricity etc but it's no use mums pretty set in her ways which is kewl. I will keep looking for ppl with rat colonies or a rat breeder but its not 'crucial'. Like most ppl said $28 is ridiculous for 1 rat but that's pet stores for ya I guess

Re: ANOTHER feeding question
I will always feed one proper sized prey rather than multiple smaller prey to my snakes

Re: ANOTHER feeding question
You should wait until you have a place of your own. Yes correct " you shouldn't have bought a snake that eats rats, since your mom won't allow you to keep the appropriate sized meals and you're not willing to fork out money to feed your snake. It sounds like you got the snake on a whim and now your stuck.

I am not STUCK! if there is NO other option I WILL and DO pay for the rats but I was just CHECKING to see if there was a cheaper option! I am not poor but I'm not rich either! If ur kid urgently needed medication and it was expensive, u pay for it but in the meantime u check to to see if there is a cheaper option that is still ok for the kid and if not u just keep paying!! Anyone would do that! But a selfish person would buy th cheaper option withought caring about if it was still as good! oh and I have just bought him an expensive outdoor enclosure that is being shipped up from Victoria, I checked around to see if there are cheaper ones that are closer by and there were but none of them were as big, long and perfect enough for a diamond python so I spent the money to give him the best!!

Re: ANOTHER feeding question
^Sorry to say but I agree. You should have thought of arrangements before you got it.

Re: ANOTHER feeding question
What you need to do is sit down with your mother and have an adult conversation. She needs to realize that what you bought cannot eat Dog food, and that to properly care for it, you need to feed it accordingly
Can I ask how old you are?

This is all very confusing. I'm 21. What I am saying is: I CAN buy rats for him, I'm allowed to! But I can't buy in bulk cos mum does NOT want them in her freezer and I can't buy my own freezer cos of electricity prices. I offered to pay more board but she said no. So when I need to feed him a rat I have to buy SINGLE which is pretty expensive, but I was just ASKING if their was a CHEAPER but still ok for my snake option. But if there ISN'T really a cheaper option, then I am just going to keep buying him SINGLES which I can easily do no real problems. From what I am hearing, there is no real other option so I WILL keep buying him LARGE rats, so this is how I feed him, 1 medium quail- wait 2 weeks, another medium quail-wait 2 weeks,1 large rat-wait 3 1/2 weeks, 1 medium quail-wait 2 weeks etc.

Re: ANOTHER feeding question
What you need to do is talk to your mom and see if you can work somthing out. If you cannot come to an agreement, maybe get a good paying job and buy the rats, this Hobys not cheap but $28 for 1 rat is insane. This all should have been thought of before bringing the snake home. Did you not know it ate lg rats?

I DO buy the rats, I buy all the things he needs, I was told by his breeder he can eat large rats but just go with medium rats, I did not know that medium rats came in packs of 3 but mum said she will see if she can keep them in the freezer so I bought them and gave him one and as I was walking to the fridge she was hyperventilating and I had just opened the freezer and she yelled "stop! I can't do this, I will faint!" so I rang the breeder up and said can I just give him large rats and he say yes but also give him quail so he won't get bored with just rats and mum said she's fine with quail in the fridge. Mum just is terrified of rodents and does not want them near her food or alive on the property (though we do cos were on a farm) but she is ok with me buying one when he needs it
