Reptile fan, new to the forum

As if the title isn't obvious, why else would I be joining a reptile forum?

My history with snakes is not exactly colourful. I have personally never fully owned a reptile of my own, but I have shared some with siblings. The snakes that have come through my life have all been registered rescues, and some only stayed for a short time. My step brother when I was younger worked at a reptile zoo, and because of the space and terrariums we had in our house, now and then he would get something cool that would stay with us for a little while before it was finally permanently placed in a zoo.

My history is as follows:

Snake #1 - Female Ball Python (Snickers)

She was rescued from a family who obviously had no idea what they were doing, likely as a 6 year old child I could have raised a snake better(though probably still not well enough) than they did. I don't quite remember the length or weight of the snake when we got her but she had quite a few issues. She was being raised in a 4 gallon tank, that was nothing but glass. No heat sources, in a basement and she wasn't doing well when we got her. When my brother finally had her up to better health she was fully registered and placed with a permanent family that has taken care of her last time I heard. She was about 2 years old when she left our house.

Snake #2: Female Ball Python (Ashta)

Again another rescue but I don't remember hearing the details of how this one was found, or anything of the sort. She was 2 years when we got her and this was before getting rid of Snickers. It didn't take long for her to get back to health and becoming a happy snake but after about 9 months with her we found her a permanent home after registering her as well.

Snake #3: Male Rosa Blood Python (King)

The name was carried over from the previous owners, King was rescued when my brother's friend had to move out of his house and into a one bedroom basement apartment. He came with the tank. Already registered, it only took us 9 months to place him, and we were only looking for about a month.

Snake #4: Male Ball Python (Eros)
Another rescue, the same story pretty much as Snickers. We brought him back to health, and after a year and 2 months he was registered and placed with a good family.

Snake #5: (Cannot recall the sex) Albino Ball Python (Jello)
By far my favourite of the snakes when I was a kid, bright colours, and quite an active snake. We kept Jello for only a year before the reptile zoo had her placed with them.

That is my history with snakes. I have also had 2 Bearded dragons. I had them for 4 years before moving caused me to find them a new home.

I joined the forum because it's been about 10 years since I have had a reptile, and I am planning as soon as I get the ability to set up a terrarium and everything to again find myself a reptile pet. I haven't yet decided on what I want.

I'm still thinking on that. Going to the Toronto Reptile Expo yesterday has me going through a little of everything. I've never had a Chameleon, and my boyfriends sister picked one up, seeing them yesterday kind of warmed me up to the idea (Which I never thought would happen because their eyes creep me out haha). I'm not thinking anything too crazy right now though, I want to get a little more settled before I do that so if I am looking at snakes I'm thinking a Sand Boa, or another Ball Python. Or possibly another Bearded. I saw a Monitor yesterday that really caught my eye so I'm going to research them a whole lot.

If you want to get any animal make sure you do your research. Espectially the chameleon's. They need very specialised care. If you need to ask me any question's you can pm me because I was going to get one than 2 yeand researched them for a little more years. Will still probably get one just not for a while. The chameleon's are awesome just realy precise on what you need. Once you get started up with them it won't be hard but getting there can be tricky.

With any animal I have owned, including my specifically bred cats and dogs I have done tonnes of research. If I were to get a lizard I have never had before it wouldn't be done on a whim. When I first got my bearded (Which I have noticed a lot of the time do not need the amount of care that a lot of my friends have put into them, not saying that caring for them more than they really need is a bad thing) it took me a over a year before I felt comfortable enough with the terrarium that I had, the things I had in it, the placement of my terrarium in my room, as well as making sure I always had a good flow of food coming in.

Animal cruelty is one thing that I cannot and will not allow, and a lot of the time especially with reptiles I have seen people getting them as pets because they figure all they do is sit in a terrarium all day, rarely eat, and never need any stimulation. I have seen the results of people who attempted to raise these creatures without the knowledge and to me it is heart breaking. I do however have a family of people around me that have had numerous chameleons, frogs, salt water fish, other lizards, and tonnes of mammals all successfully raised and they all lived happy healthy lives there to help me out as well. They have nearly always had chameleons as well. I have a number of books I have listed to pick up, a great support system of people who know what they are doing, and a number of people within the Toronto area that know what they are doing when it comes to reptiles as well. Also another reason I joined the forums I have so I can get real people's tips and tricks, as well as figure out a lot of common problems before I even think about picking something up.

Thanks for the concern and on the point of Monitors, and Chameleons if anyone has any books or sites(whatever) they can give me to pick up, I would be grateful to add that to my list. =]

Haha I realize how uncommon calling it a "Rosa" Blood is now. I tried searching to find a picture close to the one I owned and had to actually ask my brother what the hell the proper name for it was after that. It is actually just a morph. It's a T+ albino Blood Python apparently.

Bubbleguns! That is awesome! Just wanted to be sure. I wish I had the money to buy a chameleon but right now I just don't so I guess I will have to wait.... I am still in debt
50$ to my parents because I got a corn snake that I didn't have enough money for with everything. I know that I wouldn't have enough money so I just got a loan from my parents and planed everything out. What kind of chameleon are you getting?

Kudos to this pattern of repeated rescues. My hat off to you and anyone else involved in reptile rescues as they are so desparately needed. Welcome to this forum and may you find whatever snake that pleases you the most.
