Snow days!

A little off-topic, I know, but still... I'm curious.

We had a snow day yesterday... (that's why I wasn't here.. I can't stand my slow net at home...) I really just sat around and played video games.. .^^ I love snow days! It doesn't snow much here anymore, but I know a lot of you live up in Canada and what-not, what do you do when you're snowed in?

(sigh) I have to go to work whether we have a snow storm or not...it usually only takes me about 15 minutes to get to work from home so i don't have any excuse...on a bad day it might take over 30 minutes

We're not "snowed in" unless more than 5 feet falls... everything goes as normal.

Hahaha, well I see you're from Kansas, so I'm gonna assume that you get very little snow there, if any, am I right?
I once lived in Atlanta, Georgia, for a few years as a child and it snowed once the whole time I was there. It was about an inch of snow and it shut down the city for, like, 3 days! It was hilarious, actually...although I can understand, since no one there was used to driving in snow, not to mention the lack of winter tires! And it was maybe -10 to 0 C and everyone was so concerned about how cold it was! Hahaha!
I think I've had maybe 3 snow days in all of my education experience here in Canada (which amounts to around 15 years), and they were either because of EXTREME temperatures (like, -50C with the windchill) or, like corr said, we got 5 ft of snow.

That last "snow day" we had in winnipeg, my dad's car was completely covered in snow!

What we did was we called a bunch of our friends just as the snow was really coming down but not bad enought to keep us off the roads yet and met at this girl's house and had a big party and all slept there. That was pretty fun!;

When I lived in vancouver if they got 1 cm of snow the city would shut down, good thing, no one but us easterners knew anything about driving on snow. traffic was great, except when you got to your destination everything was closed.

Snow...Day? What is this snow day you speak of?

The only way I don't have to go to school is if we have an ice storm (Like the one in ...97 was it?) and there's trees and power lines falling down all over the city! Otherwise it doesn't matter if it snows or not we HAVE to go to school/work... although, I saw a news clip of somewhere in the states where it snowed -- get this -- 2 CMs!! And everybody was panicking, they got out of school early and people where rushing out to the store to buy emergency candles... unfortunately I don't remember were it was but it was SO hilarious.

We've hardly gotten any snow this year *knock on wood*... Guess it's one of those global warming/ green house effect things going on. Oh well! I'm looking outside now and there's about 1.5 feet of snow in my backyard so there's hardly anything. Guess I better go put out my fire before my igloo melts... Haha

Oh, and I don't mean it just had snow on it, there was like 4 feet of snow!

One of the very few snow days I remember was in 78 I think. You couldn't see the sidewalk plow doing it's business... just a stream of snow shooting out of the bank. There was a lot of forts and snowball fights that year!

I honestly can't remember the last time we got snowed in, I suspect it was the ice storm last decade? Last year it only snowed once or twice, this years' winters packing a lil more punch, but still I look out my window and see no snow. I doesn't really want to stay - and that's more than fine by me!!!

We are complete wusses in England, we only need a couple of inches of snow and the country grinds to a halt!!! We just don't know how to deal with it!

I've been in Canada twice over Xmas and New Year in the past, so I DO know what 'cold' really means!!! But I'm one of the few, round here...

yeah brig...i was in London about (yikes) 16 years ago when you had a horrible storm and the tubes (or subway) was down for almost a week...it was awesome !

It could have been the one in January that year. I was living in Hamilton Ontario at the time. They don't get much snow there, so the city ground to a halt (but then all of southern Ontario was under 4 feet of snow too). Since I lived only 2 blocks from work, I was 'volunteered' to go and answer the phone for international customers who had no clue about what was going on.
Seems the only people who weren't at home those two days were me and the thief who stole my purse out of my desk while I was in the washroom.


Normal snow days are few and far between here. Last one I recall was January 98, when that ice storm passed through and did horrendous damage in Eastern Ontario and Quebec.

It's got to be pushing 2 feet (60 cm) of snow and more on the horizon, before they even consider closing schools. To close down businesses too ..... sheeeesh.... tons of snow, >60 KPH winds and -20 C/0F, or something close.

in January of 1999 we got about 6 feet of snow and the airport was shut down and we had to call the army in to help with snow removal ... but i still had to go to work
