Thanks, but if you don't like aggressive snakes these aren't for you.

Re: Carly's feeding pics
Really, you find Carpets aggressive?? Or just the IJ's??
I'll hopefully be getting an IJ soon, I can't wait to get to know it's personality.

hatchling carpets can be very defensive biters, but they usually calm down with handling
they also calm down once they get a bit of size about them and realise your not going to eat them
out of all the carpets i have kept (well into dounle figures ) i have only had 2 or 3 that were biters
that said i don't go into my tanks after early evening as most carpets are in hunting mode at that time of day
carpets are a great species to keep and i've found only a small minority of them to be defensive agressive
cheers shaun

Re: Carly's feeding pics
I dont think carpets are necessarily aggressive - they CAN be nippy but most tend to calm down with size/age

That's what I thought. When I got her in June she was very friendly, but now she's just getting more and more aggressive as time goes on. I was telling my local reptile shop about it and they said that's a carpet for ya. Once she's out she not aggressive, but very flighty, but trying to get her out is a nightmare. She sits there and continuously strikes at me and it's not closed mouth, she means business. At one point I asked the reptiles shop if they would make a trade and they would give $35. They said they couldn't give me more cause they have really hard time moving them cause they are always so aggressive.
P.S. I'm not getting rid of her. They just had a snake I really wanted and I was really put out with her at the time.

get yourself a pair of leather gloves and wear a long sleeved jumper
the walk up to her tank and with NO hesitation just take her out
let her feed herself through your gloved hands for 5 minutes every night
don't handle for 3 days after eating though
after she gets used to 5 minutes handling per day,up it to 10 minutes per day
once used to that,up it to 15 minutes handling
but remember dont stand in front of the tank getting nervous or hesitating.they will pick up on it and become more defensive with you
after she is ok at being handled for 15 minutes with gloves, what you do is.....
after 5 minutes of her being out and settled with you, take 1 of the gloves off and keep feeding her through your hands getting her used to the heat of your ungloved hand
after a few handling sessions she should get used to the ungloved hand, then you take both gloves off after handling her for 5 minutes with them on
once you get them up to 15 minutes of handling with ungloved hands, thats usually them calm for life
perciverance and patience is the key to calming them down mate
re food size
i'm not trying to be cheeky but your irian will take larger prey items than the 1 pictured
carpets will easily take prey items 2,3,4 times their girth
i tend to feed large prey items less often, rather than a small items more often
great looking irian you have there
cheers shaun
