General Feeding question

My daughter's hatchling corn is very small due to feeding problems when we first got him......Now that he is finally eating....two succesful feedings.....I have read that I may want to feed him approx. every 4 days rather than once every week till he gets a little size on him. Anyone have an opinion on that?

As for my little boa.....he is about 3 months old and I was giving him fuzzies, but he had a small mouse on this past Saturday and did fine. I have read where some people feed the younger snakes twice a week rather than once per week. Is that too much?

btw...I only feed f/t. Had to use a live pinky to get the little corn started and he is just a picky eater or something cause I have to cut the head off the pinky and let him eat that and then put the body in the box and he will eat that. If I put the whole pinky in with him, even if I puncture the head or whatever...he will not eat it!!! I'm gonna keep trying with the whole pinky first before cutting it in half. Next time I'm gonna slit the head open rather than just puncture it and see if he'll take it that way.

Re: General Feeding question

i personally stick to feeding once per week with hatchlings

even slow starters

i had 1 carpet not eat until 10 months old, shes never missed a feed since.once she started eating i treated her as i would any other hatchling.

she was always quite small looking for her age,but i found in her 3rd year she is slowly catching up with other carpets her age

the above is just my way of doing things

congratulations on getting it feeding, its never ceases to amaze me the lengths we go to in getting problem feeders eating

re your boa
carpets are harder to swap from mice to rats the older they get.if boa's are the same you may want to try getting him on rat fuzzy's or small rat weaners.it takes a lot of mice to feed a full grown boas, where as a large rat will do it easier

cheers shaun

Re: General Feeding question

Thanks for the info Shaun.......I wonder why some snakes prefer mice to rats??? Guess it's kinda like how some people only like to eat the white meat when eating chicken and others the dark, lol ? I will definitely try the rat fuzzies with Morpheus.

Your right about the things we do to get problem feeders to eat.....I just couldn't give up on the little guy....not to mention my 12 year old girl looking at me with those big brown worried eyes!! It would have broken her heart if we couldn't have gotten him eating!!

re rats
some people reckon they don't taste as good as mice,so its harder to get the snake eating an infearior taste ?

re problem feeders
all the hard work pays off the minute they take that first prey item.you get a big satisfying grin along with a feeling of contentment.( i do )

cheers shaun

Re: General Feeding question

Oh yeah, when I opened the lid on the little cup I was feeding Juno (corn) in and saw he was finally eating.......I have to admit I went in the other room and did this goofy "happy dance" thing not to mention the grin on my face and my daughter's. My husband looked at me like I was out of my mind till I told him why I was dancing around the living room like an idiot, lol !!!

Re: General Feeding question

I believe I posted one of Juno, daughter's corn, but haven't gotten any good ones of Morpheus yet (boa). He just shed yesterday evening, so I'll be getting some soon!
