Two days of field herping!
Went field herping with Benny (my cousin) and KrazyKat for about... 20 hours over the last 2 days.
Caught TONS of northern water snakes, including a (we think) morph northern water snake, pitch black patches with pure white in the background.
A few turtles, mostly painted but did catch one RES.
Caught a few giant bullfrogs and even watched a dragonfly come out of its nymph shell!
Saw a PAIR of albino herons, wish we had our camera for that but we were soaked in mud.
We do have pics but Kat has them on her phone so they will be uploaded later.

Re: Two days of field herping!
Best herping boots are actually freediving boots that are made to go inside rigid flippers, try them and you will never go back. I was up to my chest in the mud at one point, and I'm talking mud, not mud with water on top. (I'm 6'3)

Yeah, I looked like a filthy swamp creature Also, I have nasty scratches all up my legs, and some particularly bad ones on my thigh that bear an uncanny resemblance to a cutter's marks, unfortunately...I swear, I'm a happy person, I don't cut myself - i have witnesses! Lol

You were on my shoulders at the time you got those cuts, so I didn't SEE it happen, for all I know you were cutting yourself while I was doing the hard work :P

Re: Two days of field herping!
Lmao well that's good to know I'm not the only short one.
Can't say I'm one for mud, but this sounds like it was a freaking blast.

Prepare to be disappointed, I'm afraid We only had my phone yesterday to snap a few, none of us had a camera or even a phone with one Saturday, which was when we made our biggest finds (the "anery" northern water snake, along with a huge normal female who seemed very calm once Stephan caught her. We carried her a good distance up the beach to relocate her to a safer spot away from the parents who like to beat these guys to a pulp when spotted along the shore. We caught a few other water snakes, along with a huge bullfrog, which caught the attention of some curious onlookers who wanted to take a look before we released it.
We will definitely have a camera next time, and next time will be very soon I'm sure. I promise we will take TONS of pics then! I'll upload a few tonight, but its just area shots and one close up of a bullfrog that let me get right up to it (ALMOST caught it after ).
It was SO awesome, I haven't gone herping in years - and I can't wait to go again!

Lmao they seriously beat the little ones up? And didn't you say she was huge... does that mean the adults are even bigger :O

Re: Two days of field herping!
Ignorant parents kill EVERY snake they see where I go herping, its not uncommon to see multiple snake bodies that have been mauled on the beach.
I always relocate animals away from where people play for this reason.
The big female was MASSIVE she was long, and really thick. Never once tried to bite anyone, and just sat calmly in Kat's arms as we left the public area.
