Jungle Laid

Pretty late if you ask me but my diamond x laid this morning and my camera is no where to be found so I could only get a crappy cell picture. I am letting her maternally incubate the eggs.
Any advice??

Re: Jungle Laid

She was just waiting for him to come back, so if you had questions she knew you get good advice.

Re: Jungle Laid

Looking good man. Glad you finally got those eggs.

Iv always been curious about maternal incubation. I assume it makes your snake pretty much untouchable for the weeks it takes to get the eggs ready to hatch eh?

Re: Jungle Laid

I have read a little info on the net, but not much. I have thermostats, I'll also be monitoring temps with my gun. I kinda moved her to see the eggs not sure if i should take the slug out ( its right on the side) I dont want to see mold grow.

I really know nothing about it, but from what I hear the snake will kick the bad eggs out, My uneducated opinion would be to wait a bit then if the snake still doesn't take care of it, go in and grab it.

Lol easier when its not your own hand/arm your suggesting get torn off.

then again I suppose its one of the little quirks of maternal incubation.. loss of limb and such.

The snakes can only INCREASE the temperature of the eggs, and increase the humidity, not the other way around so if the temps get too hot she will loosen her coils which will also lower the humidity of the eggs, and so on.
Make sure to leave the temperatures more of less normal and she will handle the rest. Humidity isnt something you should worry about too much, she can bring it up to 100% if she wants to as long as the temps aren't too high.
Don't attempt to feed the mother, but this should go without saying.

Don't worry about mold, it shouldn't harm the other eggs as long as the slug doesn't burst it should hold its form until the eggs hatch. If you see an opening to retrieve it go for it, but don't stress the mother.

Answered above.

Quick side note, there are 2 ways a snake maternally incubates, the BP method where the mother goes back and forth from the heat source to the eggs and back, and the retic method where the mother does controlled muscle twitches which increase the temperature of her body. I'm not sure which carpets fall under but you should find out.

if the sluggs not attatched to the clump of eggs and you can get it out with little stress to mum, then i would take it out

if its stuck then i'd leave it and try and keep an eye on it

you can use things like atheletes foot powder to slow the rate of mould growth or sometimes dry it out completely.

thats in an incubator i think the powder would be HAMFULL TO MUM though

i've e mailed a couple of my carpet mentors to see if they can give some advice

cheers shaun

If you can get in without bugging the mom, and the egg is starting to go bad, there is always the option of using a syringe to drain the egg so you don't risk tearing an egg. If an egg does tear use a bandaid. It works!
A little mold wont kill the eggs around it, but lots might.
