Temp guns

So I've been meaning to get one forever and just never got around to it. My enclosures have multiple thermometers and I have a few with probes I have been using for checking specific spots in my enclosures. Well today I got a great deal on one at lowes and gave all my enclosures a thorough going over and was surprised at what I found in a few. Most of my temps wher right on but 2 of my basking areas were way high the basking spot in my retics enclosure was reading at 110. I feel like an *** for not taking care of it sooner. Lesson learned

It happens guy. Just be glad you took care of business now and rectifying the problem right? No harm no foul right? I mean no reptiles were harmed or having problems because of the high temps.

Re: Temp guns

Most hardware stores sell em cheap, keep in mind if you buy one with reptile in the name from pet shops they are 45$+ instead of 10

Re: Temp guns

Yeah I bought my temp gun for about 25 bucks at a reptile show. Was the last day and they were closing shop so I got a sweet deal on it all things considered. It isn't top of the line by any standards but it is really nice. I check temps 3 times a day on all my tanks every other day. I just enjoy using it that much LOL

Re: Temp guns

I just got one on ebay for $40. I got the Pro Exotics PE2. Its awesome and I love it, definitely worth the $40. If you're going to get a reptile one, get it on ebay, not a pet store, you'll save so much money.

Re: Temp guns

Was looking at reptile ones and they were around £50 - went into a local hardware shop and the EXACT model without the "reptile" sticker was £12 so i got that one. Checking it against the pictures and serial numbers on the web it is precisely the same as the reptile gun just without the additional sticker, ergo stickers with "REPTI" on them are worth roughly £38!!

I got this bad boy (Amazon.com: Raytek MT4 Mini Temp Non-Contact Thermometer Gun with Laser Sighting: Home Improvement). Name brand, not top of the line, but not $10. Laser sighting so you know what temp you are reading. And EXTREMELY accurate to a tenth of a degree.

It is *likely* a one-time purchase; consider it an investment as this tool is invaluable if you truly want to know what the temps are.

I'm a Mech. Eng., so I don't take the inexpensive route when it comes to heating, regulation, and monitoring. Too much at stake and somewhat terrifying if you actually know how things are made. Just my $0.02.
