Why/how did you choose Your Pets names

We have a thread for our screen names, why not one for our pets.

I have 1 Black Lab named Stewart. He was named for a song by the same name by The Dead Milkmen

2 corn snakes named Tweak and Butters, named for the characters from South Park.

1 Colombian Boa Named Cap'n Squish I was going to name him Captain Morgan till I saw him squish the guts out of the first mouse that I fed him.

1 Coastal Carpet Python Named Vern. That's the name he came with, and I kind of liked it, so it stuck.

1 Jungle x Coastal carpet named Genesis. My wife named him from a video game character. Final Fantasy I believe. (I call him Mr. Happy, from a song by the same name By ICP)

1 Nicaraguan Boa Named Nina. I just liked the name. She's a sweet heart.

1.0 Aru Scrub Named Abyss. Because 1 day, after I got him, I got the feeling I was being watched. So, I turned around and was watching him, watching me, watching him......

0.1 Aru Scrub Named Amenti. My wife named her after some underworld goddess or some such thing.

Those are my stories, what are yours?

Re: Why/how did you choose Your Pets names

I tend to use mytholigical names, gods, goddesses, charecters from Narnia and some that are just made up or silly.

Tread - Her pattern looks like a tread mark from a tire.
Retread - one of Treads babies that I kept.

Masubius - Masubi (Fire god) + Vasuvius (Volcano) combined.

Toby - From the movie "Roots"

etc.... too many critters here.

Re: Why/how did you choose Your Pets names

We've got a German Shepard named Kitty, because when she was a puppy she would stalk and pounce on our other animals, a Pit mix named Cosmo who came with the name, but it's perfect because he's a dork lol.

I named my corn snake Vermicelli because he's long and skinny, like the noodles

Re: Why/how did you choose Your Pets names

I really like some of the above names

Ouro - Just randomly came to me. I'd recently been diving into Ouroboros and it's meaning. I like some aspects of it, but others I don't. I'm fond of the golden Ouroboros ring(too expensive for me to buy D; ) and Ouro is orangish.. kind of fits.. Additionally, Ouro is a boss on World of Warcraft. He's described as 'The Great Sandworm'. Massive worm like creature, reference to Frank Herbert's Dune series.

(Right: World of Warcraft Tactics / Taktiken / Guides - Ouro Left: World of Warcraft Boss, Ouro )

Xybe: Came from my boy friend's main character on World of Warcraft. I decided I wanted him to name the snake since I couldn't think of any decent guy names that matched his appearance and personality.

Riley: Because Riley is very easy to rile up. He was the most hyper pup out of the litter.

Zoey: She came with it, and I think it fits. Plus she was too well acquainted to the name for me to pick a new one.

Spike: I honestly call him Beardie... Spike is too plain for me. Too common, too bleh, and I can't think of a good name. I've contemplated just calling him LazyBones since that's what he is. LOL

Ryu: Named fondly after my dear friend Blake. Me and him played together on a World of Warcraft private server several years ago. He was a moderator there(his forum name was Ryuruki, hence 'Ryu'), and getting to know him was actually an accident. He said something and I got all worried about it and mailed him stressing about if he was serious or not and if I'd done something wrong. Of course, he was just playing around. He'd always struck me as interesting to begin with, so I tried to get more conversations going with him. We eventually became very good friends.~ Still are. Only thing is, the real life has taken him in its grasp. The last I'd talked to him was about 2 weeks ago. Previous to that, around a 1 - 2 years. It was odd, he seemed to have accidentally logged onto MSN the night Stewie died... He calmed me down, we talked like the space between had never happened, and he went to bed for work. He said he'd try to get on later, but he couldn't make any promises... I guess I'll be in for another long wait but.. It's worth it.

Marigold: I like flowers. I like Marigold. This gecko has a golden tint of color all down her back. It's soft and looks as if golden pollen was just smeared down her back and tail and it just clung. therefore, I named her Marigold... She's got a horrible personality, though.

Jinna: Jinna was named short for Jennifer. I was a little kid when I named her, so Jenna probably would be more accurate but... I think the 'i' is more unique. Jinna's been one of my life long 'friends', been with me since I was roughly around 7. She's around 12 years old and still that chattiest, liveliest cat you'll ever see!

Genevieve: I've always had a fascination with this old-time name. It strikes me as dark if you look at it the right way. I think of an old, broken down house with a fence all around. A black, barred fence topped with spears.. The sky is grey.. Clouds passing by slow, so slow you'd think they weren't even moving, but time does pass. The area is barren and deserted, as if everyone had left.. or worse.. That's what I see when I think of the name Genevieve. This cat is, technically, grey, but she looks more of a Russian Blue. I remember my friend, Jocelyn, remarked that her eyes looked 'dead'. I'll admit, they did. Stewie's eyes, Stewie is Vieve's sister, were always more lively. They had a sparkle. Genevieve's? They seemingly reflected no light, almost dead or soulless. Therefore, I named her Genevieve. Besides, her grey coloring fit in well with the vision I always got.

(Technically no longer mine)Sable: About the time I met this little black kitten, I was going through my Sableye fandom(a mischievous purple colored Pokemon with gems for eyes). We'd arranged a giant family reunion since it'd been around 10 years since our last. One of the attenders had a box of kittens with her. She said that they were removed from their feral mother, who they still hadn't caught at the time, because the farmer that was caring for the mother stopped feeding mother cat in an attempt to starve her to death, and, by default, starve the kittens to death, as well. He was tired of the cats. So, the animal lover that I am, couldn't resist to look at them, and I fell for this little black kitten with a white spot on her chest. Black cats are generally deemed bad luck, and Sableye was mischievous and a Dark typed Pokemon. I thought it fit well, so I named her Sable. I later looked up the name for the meaning to make sure if this would be her name and if the meaning matched up. The meaning was, ironically, 'black'. So, she kept her name since it fit really well. I was still in frequent contact with Blake at the time, and told him about it, and he said he once owned a cat exactly like that. Since then we jokingly called her his daughter and made jokes how she was trained in 'The Force' and had ninja skills. In relation to Blake and the fact that I raised her, it makes me sad to know she's grown distant from me. After she grew old enough to be released in the house, on her own, with the other cats, she grew distant from me. Almost as if she were mad at me. I'd try to give her attention, like I did while she was a kitten, and she'd frequently get mad and claw me, then run away. I'm afraid I won't be taking her with me when I move... She's become my mother's cat, now. I really hate to leave her, since I have all her friends. She has a close bond with my ferrets, with the three 'kittens'... and all of them will be going with me when I leave. She doesn't get along with anyone else but them. Oh well...

Runt: Self explanatory. Runt of the litter, we didn't intend to keep her, we kept calling her Runt, she eventually thought it was her name. I think there's something oddly cute about it, anyways. We ended up keeping her because I grew really attached to her. She was always the wild one. She'd flee from any of us. That one day when she just hopped into my lap and fell asleep... It just struck me by surprise, because, naturally, she'd hide and stay as far away as she could. Just melted my heart to know she finally accepted me, and thus, I got really attached to her. I feel really bad when I have to go on trips for a week. She always gets so lost and upset without me. I remember the first week without me, our Uncle called about halfway through and said he couldn't find her and hadn't seen her. We came back home a few days later and she'd been hiding behind the piano the whole time. She finally came out after I persuaded her it was ok. She now spends 98% of the time in my room with me.

Abigail: I claimed and named this one at 2 weeks when we decided we'd only keep one from the litter of 6(we ended up keeping 3!). It seemed to fit her. She was soft, cream colored, and so fragile. I always think of a white color when I think of the name. A frail child with a soft, innocent personality. She seemed to fit that, so she got the name. She's all grown up now, she ended up developing a siamese print at about 4 weeks of age and it became more intense as she aged. She's got a very sassy and opinionated personality. She'll be held and loved only when she wants to be. Otherwise she wants nothing to do with you. She's also got the cutest 'doll-face' ever~ <3

(Yes, these are my photographs of her)

around 3 - 5 weeks old:

2 months:

Freud: This is the other white child from the litter of 6. Freud was actually mother's cat but, since I did raise him, he takes more of a liking to me. I'd originally fallen for a second kitten, Walker(named because he was the first to walk and best at walking, plus it really fit his looks and personality), thus talked them into keeping him -and- Abigail. Though... I knew mom really liked the other 'siamese' cat... He was a little distant to me, then, but I eventually grew closer to him and his odd personality, as well. I eventually gave up Walker so mother could own the one she wanted. It wasn't fair for me to pick two and mother not have one. Besides, Walker had issues with possessions and food. He'd attack you if you just got near whatever he had or was eating. Full on claws and teeth. At any rate, mother named him Freud because she works for Ridge Behavioral, normally dealing with patients with mental issues, therefore psychology ties in with her line of work, so she named him Freud. I personally wanted to name him Paul... because of Adam West's(Family Guy) cat named Paul, who was coincidentally white in color, as well. Besides, Freud has some WILD eyes, with a -crazy- personality.

Flandre: At the time I, one, thought Flan was a girl, and, two, had an infatuation with this girl, and close friend, named Morgana. I asked her to name him and she said Flandre. Coincidentally, a catchy song that I'm fond of is a theme of a character named Flandre.

Phoebe: I'd originally wanted to name the two ferrets, that I started out with, Dorothy and Phoebe, but, as stated above, Flan was the other. From the beginning I thought Phoebe fit her. When I think Phoebe, I see a girl that's an out cast, unaccepted. Another frail and fragile personality as well, much similar to what I see with Abigail. I found it fit well with Phoe. Most people don't like albino animals. I later looked up the name to check and the meaning came up as 'moon'. It was fitting since she's white as the moon.

Sid: Came with the name, I found it fit well, and I generally like the name Sid.

Panda: Originally came with the name Nancy, but, no offense, I detest the name Nancy. My friend, Jocelyn, said,"Panda!" and she is kind of black and white... and the name's cute.. So Panda stuck with her.

And for the kittens, so you can see the litter, here's a pic I took about 5 hours after they were born.

From left to right: Freud, Walker, (black)either Scout or Bella, Abigail, Runt, Scout/Bella

We had two sets of twins, both boy/girl sets, and two odd balls, both boy/girl. So that made an equal number of boys and girls.

If you're wondering, Bella was named because of the bell on her collar, and it seemed to fit her personality, and Scout?.. Well, I didn't name him until the last week of having him because I just couldn't think of a name for him. I eventually decided Scout since he'd often run around looking for the others(scouting them out).

Re: Why/how did you choose Your Pets names

Ball Python--Aramis--She came with the name. Its from The Musketeers (the first owner thought she was a he when named..oops...)

Macklotts Python--Freckles--because my son said he has freckles all over and technically its his snake. (He is 16 and wants to be a herpatologist).

Bearded Dragon--Pyro--named by my 13 yr old son, its his pet, and he said hes a dragon so he gets a fierce dragon name even if he doesn't breathe fire, lol.

Black Rat--Food--have a large male black rat right now because Aramis doesnt want to eat and so have named it Food, because thats what it will be when Aramis decides shes hungry again

Ha, I laughed at the Dorothy one too xD

I was also thinking,"Was Food just a cruel joke since you own snakes or is it literally Food?" xD I would have called it Dinner in such a case. "What's that rat's name?" "Oh that one? This is Dinner." "... What?" LOL Food works just as well, though.

haha, the last one we kept around for a few days was called 'Dinner'. LOL I had to change it up a bit. Any other suggestions for any future meals that might need to stick around a few days? lol

Vittles, Munchies, chew toy..... If I fed live, and I named a rat it would not become food. even if I named it food. I grew up on a Holstein farm, you never name the cattle.

Wayne, what did Dorothy think of her namesake?

Re: Why/how did you choose Your Pets names

I also choose gods and goddesses for names a lot. Other times its some randomly girly cute name. I started a new thing with my rats to name the babies in each litter after characters in a movie or show so I can remember them easier. (It's hard remembering tons of names litter after litter). My recent litters were pirates of the caribbean themed for one litter and family guy for the other. The one downside to the movie/show thing is you have to pick ones with lots of female characters if you are like me and hold back mostly females.

Some of my pets over the years:
Zebo- 1st kitty because he looked like a zebra to me
Baby- 2nd kitty
Prince- cocker spaniel
Duke- cocker spaniel
Neptune- boxer/rotty mix
Eden- red nose pit bull (she had an apple shaped patch on her eye)
Tigger- orange tabby cat
Porsche- torti cat
Gwendolynn- burm
Jake- python (he was already named that)
Blackie- black rat
Nina- grey tuxedo cat named after my passed on grandma
Baghera- black cat
Sunshine- yellow peachface lovebird
Skittles- the crazy rainbow color lizard my brother caught

man I could go on for hours probably haha. so many more with all the breeding I've done... end up trading and selling SO much.

-Ghonda- my corn snake was previously named and i figured i'd just let it stay.
