Anti-rant!

I just wanted to share how GOOD my chain pet store people are. Obviously still nowhere near the knowledge base of say a breeder, but still good.

The primary associate's parents ran a reptile rescue for most of his childhood, so he's been around snakes and lizards pretty much all his life, and knows his stuff. The manager err's on the side of caution completely, and owns a few lizards, I think.

For example, yesterday I was in and she had some new corns that she refused to show me, because they had just eaten a day or two ago. Something that I understand is hard to come by in a chain pet store. Also, when I was looking at Vermicelli, I saw a mite. When I told her, she immediately said "Well I can't sell them yet, then" and quarantined him and his cagemate for 2 weeks with constant treatment.

Compare this to my ball python years ago that came ridden with either mites or ticks, and it's quite the contrast.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my positive experiences with a chain pet store

Fair play, it is easy to rant about bad treatment but some places deserve the praise as well, inwould recommend our local reptile shop to anyone as they also give fantastic service and aftercare, takes about an hour to go buy rats tho cos we end up chatting for ages!!

Ha, same here! But for us it's buying crickets.

I'd say the pet store we go to for crickets is good... but she really does want a sell, and, at times, poorly houses snakes, such as 10 - 15 ball pythons in ONE 20 gallon long with green repticarpet, one log hide, and a water dish.

She got mad at us for buying a corn snake at an expo and said expo snakes normally die. ,:l

Very refreshing to hear!
I agree that the good ones should be applauded for doing the right thing. If they have a website you can always write a nice review on their store.

Re: Anti-rant!

A family owned pet store/shop is way different then a chain pet store.
I infact love to walk into specialty shops, its like going to the zoo but free

Re: Anti-rant!

My snake was originally bought from PetSmart along with her original bedding (sani-chips), heat lamp, water dish and UTH. This was great so a startup setup. I have since added some drift wood, a second water dish (so one could always be washed with out leaving her with any water. I add a warm moist hide when she is in shed and I feed her in the enclosure that she came home in. I have also added tongs to hold her prey. She is now enclosed in a 20gal. round-edged aquarium with a wire-mesh top which is now secured with a hold down strap. Her light sits on the wire mesh of the lid. I now by my bedding (aspen) and all my prey from "Just Reptiles" a small store devoted to reptiles exclusively. They have been great and their workers know tons about snakes and lizards. I am doing as much as I can to support this store and tell others about it so that it will continue to survive. Anyone here in Edmonton, Alberta looking for a place to get their reps?? Try "just reptiles" around the corner from Princess Auto on 163St, hust off Mayfield Road. (If you know anything about West Edmonton, you will know what I am talking about!
