Hey, I already declared the herping season started on the 9th, up in the general forum after seeing tons of turtles and frogs. I haven't been out looking for snakes yet, but hopefully this week.
Congrats on the sightings.

spring herping
Things have been moving here in MD for a fwe weeks now. On the way home from a vacation to NC I saw a bunch of spotted turtles and many other turtles out basking. I have seen many many toads on the backroads after rain. There have been quite a few garters and ringnecks emerging from their hibernation so I can't wait till I start finding everything else. That is a nice list BTW.

Just cuz I don't know anything about herping.......
Doesn't it upset the ecosystem to take that many animals out of their natural environment. It seems to me that herping is for fun, whilst there are plenty of captive bred herps available....Just my impression, I admit I know nothing about it.
Maybe that's not the case....

I don't take any animials out of the wild, just observe and photograph. I agree that there is enough captive bred around. You can't tell in the picture, but there is a camera in his right hand.

I observe and
when i herp I take photos observe and some times keep em for a day and let them go where we found them. I'd never do anything to upset the enviroment .

my guess is that it would be a melanistic garter snake. Hopefully I'll have some pictures of them when I return from Pelee Island next week.
