ok all of the species you have mentioned would make good first snakes and all of them are completely handleable. now you said you would prefer an active species so i would recommend either the king or milk. they are both very similar and easy to care for. the ball and childrens pythons are going to be a lot less active than the king and milk. there are tons of breeders for all of these species. if you have any more questions feel free to ask

I have to agree. I'm more partial to ball pythons myself but I'm not looking for an active snake. They are very docile and get nice and girthy without getting too long. They can be picky eaters though so if you do decide to go with a ball, I would go with a little larger, more established snake since it's more likely to be feeding. Good luck with whichever you choose! My guess is the next question you post will be "What makes a good second snake?" lol.

Out of the choices mentioned I'd go with the Childrens Python (I keep/kept all of them mentioned). BPs are very boring compared to the rest, but baby Kings & Milks are very nervous & shy (as are BPs) but baby Childrens aren't very timid at all & Childrens are actually quite active compared to most other Pythons. Baby Childrens don't bite & musk/crap on you either. Whatever you decide make sure it is well established on FT prey first & comes from a reputable source that backs there snakes up. Mark
P.S. & there are always Cornsnakes of course

if you want active try a beauty snake(blue, taiwan) theyre fast and dont like sitting still. This is my first and i haven't had any problems. They can be moody but if u handle em enough they grow out of that.

Re: First Snake

I agree on the king i have a desert king and have read that even when w/c they can be picked up without being handled before... mine never bit anyone sofar so just by my standards i would go with the king... they look cool too

Re: First Snake

I would recommend a Jungle Carpet. They are fairly active and don't get too big, and look awesome when they are fully grown with a big triangular head and all that yellow and black.

I agree, Jungles are awesome...but not a beginner snake. As babies they can be quite nippy and tend to musk/crap on you.
I think that the Childrens fits all the criteria.
