I feel like a nerd...
I don't know if it is just me, but when I started out this hobby, I thought latin names were useless! Now, after 3 years, I get mad if the site/store can't supply me with a latin name! I like it orgnized in latin... I don't know. I feel kinda nerdy, knowing all the scientific names for everything, lol.

Hey thanks! You've had some pretty cool ones yourself though.
I usually just think of what I want and try to find it on the net. That, or I come across it by fluke.
This "Pokey and the Bandit" one, my buddy emailed me. I felt obligated to show it to the world!

I use a mix of both -- although if a pet store posts ONLY latin names, that usually annoys me -- because half the time I don't know what the common name is... it's nice when they post both
I KNOW the scientific names for some animals, but I still use the common name most times when I'm talking about them... latin names tend to be long, and rather hard to pronounce... hehe
So yup, you're a nerd *grins*

No, you're not a nerd. We herpers take pride in the label given to us by all the so-called "normal" folks out there who don't understand our passion.
We are freaks, and PROUD TO BE FREAKS. You're just a superfreak since you've taken herping to the next level and properly identify your animals.
I would love it if most of the petstores I see would know the Latin names of their herps. Usually they mislabel even the common names of anything more "exotic" than firebelly toads, leopard geckos, bearded dragons, red-tailed boas, and Ball pythons.

I agree with Clownfishie, I usually need a mix of both. I am more familiar with boids, so I prefer latin names here. But when it comes to colubrids, I usually need its common name first.
I have been lurking around the venomous forum lately, and it seems that everyone there uses latin names.

Good to see so many dorks on the forum! lol, just kidding, But, I have just places common/latin name labels on all my cages (my mantids: "Hi, my name is... Molly the Chinese Mantis, or tenodera aridrifolia sinises!") Hahaha... But, yes, a mix is REALLY nice, but pet stores usualy tend to screw up... A bearded Dragons: Pangod Vittersip (HOW THE HELL CAN YOU SCREW UP THAT BADLY!?!?), but, I love latin names

I've never had a big need for the latin names, but sometimes in pet stores i'd like to see them use the latin name, or at least the proper common name (Ive seen the label "Texas Ribbonsnakes", where really theres no such thing, you can get western ribbons in texas, but they are still westerns hehe)
