Dumeril's Boa New to Forum

Hi,

I'm new here I own a male Dumeril's boa.I don't know his age but he's a wonderful snake just wish he'd eat. I love his pattern! I don't have a name yet thinking.Wanted to say hi!

I got him from a pet store not far from where I live. He was eating live mice in a paper bag every thurs they said.It's been 29 days now and I'm stuck with 2 new pets the feeder mice.He's also trying to shed his little eyes are covered with skin I made him a water bowel he loves to bathe! A shedding shouldn't take so long either his belly is peeling constantly like fish scales and it look to me a little red,his tummy from the peeling. He's been peeling for over a week in small amounts.Hes in the bathroom in a nonstressful place all to himself I watch the temps he's active but looking a little thin.He poops good esp in water.I just worry about him ALOT!

pet store + loves to bathe = you should check him for mites

and don't be afraid to give him a spray with a spray bottle to help those eyecaps

I put a regular rock about softball sized in all of my snake cages for shedding assistance as well

Congrats on your new boa, he looks great Dums are awesome snakes...

What is that in the corner of his tank -- is it aquarium gravel? If so, I'd remove that asap. Definitely not a good substrate for snakes. The wood shavings that seem to be in the rest of the tank are a much more suitable substrate -- although for the first few weeks to a month it might not be a bad idea to switch him to paper towel, especially since he came from a pet store -- this will allow you to see mites easier, if he's got any.

Hi again

I named the Dumeril's Boa "Double D" from the cartoon Ed,Edd & Eddy. He shed today he looks great! I took the gravel out I got alot of yelling for that but I honestly didnt know. I dont see any mite or seen any while we had him. shouldnt be a bad thing for him to like the water so much I got yelled @ for having a small water bowel so I made this one myself and secured the cut parts so he cant get hurt he loves it! Hes looks very clean and soft now since he shed. Still no eating trying to have patience he's a gorgeous snake we looked @ this one and the rainbows but they were much higher and I'm glad now we didnt I heard they arent a good first snake? Although my bf has owned a rosy RIP and a ball RIP. I personally love the burmese too but a dummy would've been my first choice. I like to look @ patterns whos got the prettiest and aggression and how big they get.We didnt want a HUGE snake we have cats and a baby so didnt want something we couldnt afford to take care of ither. I still very much worry about him eating my cats when hes fully grown...brrr not a good thought.

love Dumeril's boas, he looks nice congrats!

As said previously, if came from pet store would avoid the mulch/wood chips for the first month... just to be safe.
As for the patchy sheds.. that will come with your choice of substate aswell, if hes dragging his belly on that it scratches and dirt will get under scales preventing a good clean shed and making it irritated and red like you said.sometimes other than that humidity plays a good role.

Eating prob..well for starters he looks big enough to be on rats... and what do you mean by feeding live mice in a paper bag? anyways if you can switch to fresh killed or frozen thaw. if hes not eating he may be not used to new home yet like said before give time. He may be used to the same food and it being live. temps also play a big role in feeding response too . hope this helps
