Update and question....

UPDATE: We have now been summonded to appear in court on February 17th, which is next Thursday. They have now included in their application that they want us to get rid of our dogs as well as our reptiles, saying they are vicious and dangerous. The neighbor said our dogs are "fouling the yard and intimidating neighbor attempting to work in their garden" and "fear endangering" the neighbors. Does anyone have information about salmonella and snakes? They are trying to prove that all reptiles have them. Any imput would be appreciated. Thanks again Kristy and Frank

Not that the samanella is a risk to anyone but yourself since your neighbors aren't going to be handeling your animals!! GAWD how I hate ignorant people. As long as you are cleaning up after the dogs I can't see how they are fouling up the yard. Not to mention things like this should be done before they have you buy the place and then tell you, ok, now that you have to pay us all this money we are going to make you get rid of all your animals!! How stupid is that.

I don't know if all reptiles carry salmonella, but I do know they can transmit fewer diseases and cooties to us than the typical family dog or cat.

Check out Zoonoses- by Daniel S. Shapiro, M.D.
That should give you a bit of ammunition.
Be sure to compare not only the number of diseases, parasites and health problems between reptiles and the common family pets, but the severity of them.

Oh... and rub in the fact that dogs, cats, and even 'food grade' animals like cows and pigs carry salmonella... not to mention chickens and eggs. And the innocent looking rodents that they keep buying for their kids can pass it on too.

If they want to know who Daniel S. Shapiro, M.D. might be and if he's to be believed:

Director, Clinical Microbiology Laboratories
Boston Medical Center
Boston, Massachusetts

Assistant Professor of Medicine, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Boston University School of Medicine
Boston, Massachusetts

That should give them something to think about for a while.
