Corn Snake tank size?

im going to be getting a new corn snake soon, and was wondering, how big of a tank should i get. i already have a 40 gallon from a previous pet, and some people have told me that i could put a corn snake, around 12 inches in a 40 gallon. or should i just go ahead and buy a smaller one, like a 10 or a 15 and then transfer it to the 40 gallon once it gets older?

With enough hiding places, a young corn should do okay in there. Better bet is to get a rubbermaid (shoebox size for a baby cornsnake), drill vent holes in the side, and set him up in there until he grows a bit.

A 40 gallon wide tank is great for an adult corn, but with a baby the real issue is how secure the tank is rather than the amount of space. Most lids for larger tanks are not very secure and a 12 inch corn can squeeze out through a really tiny space. I suggest getting a rubbermaid type shoe box or sweater box, put air holes around the sides, provide heat on one end with a heat pad and use that until the snake is at least 2.5 feet long.

best of luck with the new corn - they are great snakes,

I agree- other than squeezing thru the cracks, a 40 is cool. As long as the snake has lots of hiding spaces its fine, just make sure you have a very very tight lid.

Alternatively, a little rubbermaid with heat pad is honestly better- corns are so undemanding anyways.
