Colour Variety Between Sexes

At my work we have two juvenile chameleons. I wanna get one very bad, and I plan do within the next week or two. We have a female which is amazingly tempered and loves being handled and eat of my hand. And we have a male (which I really want), but he doesnt enjoy being handled. I want a lizard that can make the best colours, and I believe males are much better at this. Can females make just as good colours? And if I hold the male a little more and he gets accustomed to me, willl he become more tame? I'm aware chamelons dont like being held. Im more cocerned with a pretty display animal that can make the trippiest colours.

Males will usaly have brighter colors. What species are they?

yes most but my favorite cham that does not follow this rule would have to be the jewled chameleon. The females are so intensly coloured its amazing.

It all depends on the chameleon as far as taming goes.
Some males will do fine with handling up untill the reach sexual maturity. then they just get mean, veilds are nutoriouse for this.
My male panther was also handle-able when younger but cannot go anywhere near him now. lol the bugger.

So really it all depends. Youll just have to see how lucky you are I geusse.

This is also the case the females. Tameness is strictly based on species and indivuals there of. There are some perfectly nice male veileds out there, and some perfectly horrible female panthers .. its all the luck of the draw.

Which species are you talking about? The Jeweled Chameleon is usually the name given to Furcifer campani. Those females when gravid are blackish to very dark green. Furcifer minor and furcifer lateralis females have tremendous color when gravid.

Just wondering.

oh shoot, lol. One of my chameleon books has them listed as carpet chameleon, but it also says jeweled is sometimes used.
I thought the carpet chameleon showed vivid colouration all the time. lol my bad.
anyone else know what i am talking about. I geusse it would help alot if I studied the scientific names more.

Depending on the collection locale you can have some spectacular females. I have seen some orange ones that would knock you socks off. Then again I have seen some that were pretty "Blah".

I like them best when they are gravid. The vivid colors on the black backround.

yea thats awsome. Just from some magazines and books ive seen pics of really intense purples and reds it was amazing. I doubt the pics hardly do the colours much justice, compared to seeing them first hand.

I am also going to Dominican Republic on sat. the 19th. and I know the the rhino iguana can be found there in very few numbers, as well as turtles, crocs and poisonous snakes. But I can cannot recall hearing of any chameleons coming from there, though of course i may be mistaken.
Of all people I would expect you ( Carl) to know for certain.

Yep no chance of Chameleons there. Chameleons are only naturally found in the old world. The Dominican Replublic is new world.

Boa and iguana are in the same boat, new world only. There is one exception though. Madagascar has boa's and iguana's. I don't know if it has been theorized yet as to how these two made it to an island in the old world, especially one so far.

Have fun on that trip. Should be plenty to see.

ya i cannot wait. Ive been needing to get away for so long now. Its been three years since ive been anywhere and ive done nothing but work almost everyday since then.
I would think that some could have made it on natural floating rafts of vegitation. I know of one island that they theorized this event taking place. Apperantly either a pregnant female managed to make the long trip alive and layed eggs on the island, or layed her eggs on one of these rafts which washed up on shore hatched and startes a new colony of iguanas.
Or of course theyre could be the possibilities of early settlers and travelers bring these animals there unwillingly.
BUt i think those iguanas and boas have been on madagascar much longer then that havent they?

Ya I watch alot of the discovery channel. lol
