I was POSITIVE that I saw ovulation last week in this girl, but she didn't enter a shed cycle and she didn't look fat. Sure enough, after some spraying and some male combat, she just had to prove me wrong.

For some reason, EVERY year, I forget that female Carpets have a "double swelling" 95% of the time. I don't know why I always get excited over the first meaningless one, but I do. Invariably. LOL!

Jeff,
I'm starting to believe that copulation between swellings is
VERY important.
The first breeding(s) seem to stimulate follicular development and
the first swelling. Where the breeding between swellings brings on
ovulation vs. reabsorbtion of the follicles.
This is not set in stone, but noticed it over the last few years of breeding.

Stuff you already know Jeff I'm sure.

I agree Mardy. Same with BP's. I breed right up to the end. Carpets seem less apt at storing sperm than other pythons from what I've observed.

I agree with your observation Mardy. I keep introducing my pairs all the way up to the time they begin their shed cycle because like Jeff said, you see a swelling and you think, man that has to be ovulation, and then you seperate and introduce again and see more copulation.

Last year I did remove the male 2 weeks prior to ovulation and was lucky that she did retain sperm. Like I said this year I'm taking no chances! One female has shed and the other will tomorrow or the next day.

Jade's Ovulation was on January 12 and last year it was on January 14. The funny thing is I introduced them much sooner and copulation was witnessed about 40 days sooner than last year. I also had them at completely different temps than last year. It just goes to show that they may have their own schedule despite what we do.
