Question Starting Herp Societies

With the absence of any local herp society or club, or whatever you like to call it, I've been considering trying to start one, but really have no clue on where to start.

Does anyone have any knowlede or past experience with starting one? Or know of any resources that I may be able to find such information?

Thanks a lot in advance for any input.

I would be interested in any info as well. There is nothing in Manitoba, but I'm sure I could round up a few members if I did start one.

I've started one online, which just meant going to yahoo groups and filling in the right fields.

I don't know if there's a government agency you can register with to make things more official. I think it may be a bit of work but it would be good for the education of the community.

you'll have to decide how often you want to meet and what direction you want the club to take (proactive rights, education, etc).

I'm board member of the Reptile and amphibin society of Philadelphia (R.A.S.P.), we just started about 5 months ago. I can tell you it's not the easiest thing to do. You'll need some people really willing to dedicate some time to it.

If you have any specific questions about getting started I may be able to answer some of them just E-mail me at Pcurtus@aol.com.

As for us we're having a great meeting this month. On nov.18 the monday following the N.A.R.B.C. show in philly R.A.S.P. will be featuring a presentation by world renowned herpetoculturist Bill Love. There will be a cover of $5 for non-members but membership is only $10. For more info E-mail me or swing by our table at the N.A.R.B.C. show.

two cents

There is one great society allready in exsitence for the province of Ontario. I know for some of the outer city people of Toronto it is a task to get to but their newsletter is amazing and there talks they put on at the reptile expo are good. The Ontario Herpetological Society is a good club and is always in need of a few good members contact chondros@rogers.com Steve Marks is the present Leader (President). He can forward any info you need
