Sexing

I want to sex my baby bp but I don't have a probe. I have heard and read about other methods to check the sex but am not sure of what is the easiest and best method.

When I had my snakes back in high school the guy at the pet store told me that one of them was a female because it had a broken pattern on the back of its neck. I know now that he didn't know what he was talking about.

I checked with the store where I purchased the new one and they didn't have a record of his/her sex.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The only 100% sure way is to probe the guy. If you have never done it before i woulnt try it untill someone who dose know shows you how. If you can find a reptile vet/breeder in your area im sure they would be happy to do it for you. the other method of sexing is "poping" but itsnt alway correct. and again i woulnt attempt this eather without the help of an expereanced "sexer".

Thanks, I am going to see if any of the vets in the area can do it. Or if there is anyone on this forum that has done a probing before that lives between Moncton, NB and Truro, NS let me know.

Thanks

You could also try local breeders, although I personally am unaware of any in your area....but it is another option as many breeders probe.

Good luck

It is something that I want to learn as I would like to start breeding in the future.

"Popping" is 100% accurate if done by someone experienced and early enough in to the life if a baby ball, under 4 months or so, then the males tend to pop female because they have the muscle control to be able to hold their hemipenes inside. It gets more difficult to pop as adults but can be done.

Hey mykee,

When popped, at 2 months old, what would a boy and what would a girl look like? I assumed boys would pop a small hemip, girls would just be a... nub. Right?

Whereas with females you'll just see a lump of flesh come out, with males you will see that lump of flesh with two bright blood red things sticking up at the sides.

Or any coloured things on the side, I look for any discolouration on the sides of the 'lump of flesh' A solid colour would indicate a girl, and any discolouration would indicate a boy, and if you're lucky, you'll actually 'pop' out the hemipenes and see something that looks like two snail antennas on either side. BUT what do I know, I mis-sexed 2 of my female hatchlings, (I thought they were boys).

Here is the picture of a python being popped. The picture is from "Pythons" by Patrica Bartlett and Ernie Wagner.
