thanks for all the helpful advice. we were offering him small bits since his mouth was bleeding when we picked him up and were afraid his top teeth may have been jammed into his jaw. he is feeling much friskier now, the first couple of days were spent giving him a lot of TLC (warmth and quiet). he is obviously feeling better since he hates going back into his tank, he likes being held or scaring the squirrels and birds in the yard. i really appeciate your concern.
