Wow just think of what those people could do to help people in the world if they wanted to, instead of stealing things.

I've hear of that happening before. Apparently it's a bigger problem than is being acknowledged as banks don't want the negative pubilicty to affect the usage of ATMs. I believe it was on a news segment aired by the OPP.

That was happening around here about a year ago, at a Bank of America (my bank - ahhh!) about 10 minutes from my house. Scary stuff I believe they were using a different method, though.

It happens all over. I check any ATM I use before putting my card in it.
Also, avoid those independent ones at all costs. You know the little ones you find in bars and malls that aren't affiliated with a bank. You don't need a special license or anything to buy one, just 3000 bucks or so. People have set them up in a mall with a couple of thousand bucks in them, then used the info collected to pillage the accounts of everyone that used it.
www.slashdot.org has some interesting ATM stories in their archives, including a recent one where the guys brought home the device they found and dissected it

I heard of a more direct way to get money from bank machines that happened here in Ottawa not long ago. Apparently some people attached the machine to a truck and drove off with the whole machine.

Why I only trust my CASH in my own pockets. I hate banks and anything accociated with them. See now, I do not get caught up in this crap either, only because for the sake of a "healthier" economy and good common scence, I trust cash only (and money orders at times). Unless someone would like to kill me for my money, nobody is gonna rip me off like this nor in the form or that nice percentage rate that the banks like to add.
All in all, I feel you deserve to have your money taken if you trust to place it in a bank. Just the way the world is man. Put it in your pocket, after all you surely worked your arse off for it, right? Why let everyone else take it?

Scary stuff. Apparently there was a segment on the news today about that stuff.

It's a lot easier for you to lose it all keeping it in your pocket. Robbery? Fire? Misplacement? Storm? Yeah the small percentage the banks charge is a pain, but at least it is insurance. I rarely keep more than $20 on me (for gas since I do not use my debit card at gas stations) because I KNOW I will lose it.
