In my experiences, it's not necessary to use a divider for a two rack shelf. For one, it makes heat tape quite a bit harder to run, and the weight of the bins doesn't warrant the extra stability of the support.

With the racks that I have built like that, (six shelves of two on each) with the rubbermaids being as opaque as they are, it's pretty unlikely that they will see each other. Good luck though.

I like to keep dividers, regardless of how many tubs there are. Not only for security reasons for the snakes, but also for quarantine reasons. I don't want my snakes being so close to eachother, sharing the air like that. I haven't built one yet, but I will be in the future. My best guess would be to use either dowels or biscuits. You will have to use these methods as you are building though, you cannot add the dividers in that manner to an existing rack.

you can also just router out a 5/8" groove (provided you're using 5/8" melamine) into the middle (top and bottom of each 'shelve') to the right depth and slide the divider in.. Kinda like how some shelves are built..

Probably for the price of a melamine sheet to divide that you could buy some colored acrylic and just make a divider so they can see eachother. Plus it could be removed so if you need to put bigger rubbermaids in there you dont have to get a whole new rack.
Cheers, Ryan

also you can use the dowel method by drilling holes in the upper and lower shelves and your upright piece but not all the way through, and they have to line up, best to use a jig like i do, 1/4 inch holes are fine , then glue (carpenters)in 1/4 inch dowels , you have to put each divider in as you work your way up or down depending on how you are building it
