Best Age Starter Snake.

I was just a little confused as to how old of a BP would make a best first snake. Ive heard some people say get a hatchling but when I called N.E.R.D. today to see what they had available they said a subadult bout a year old would be best. Wich means said BP would be roughly 24-28 inches, their reasoning was that the subadult would be a known feeder , already on F/T and would tolerate handling better. Of course a 12-18 inch snake seems less intimidating than a 2 footer when it comes to putting my hand in the enclosure to hold him for the first time.

Just wanted to know what everyones opinion was on this.

Yeah you know that is a good idea. You can get an established animal, get used to caring for a ball python, then later if you want to experience a baby, you can buy another.

Oh please don't be intimidated. They are very "shy" snakes in a way, and your hand will most likely be danger free going into the enclosure A two foot ball python, even a three foot, is still a small, totally managable animal.

The only way your hand will be in danger is if you have been handling anything that might possibly smell like food.

when people refer to snakes as being x amount of feet can be misleading

a 3 foot bp can be really not what you expected

and as far as getting a yearling that is the only bonus is knowing that your getting a feeding snake, as opposed to a hatchling you never know.
