Yeah you know that is a good idea. You can get an established animal, get used to caring for a ball python, then later if you want to experience a baby, you can buy another.
Oh please don't be intimidated. They are very "shy" snakes in a way, and your hand will most likely be danger free going into the enclosure

A two foot ball python, even a three foot, is still a small, totally managable animal.
