New Classified Forum

I was thinking, maybe we could add a Misc. Section to the Classified Forum. This would be for ppl to offer non-herp realted products (vcr's, used cars, etc) in trade for herps. They have a section like this on Reptile Rescue. I think it would work very well. I seen some postings in the OTHER section like this but when put one up it was removed (never found out why). I assumed it was because you are only allowed herp related classifieds. That why I propose a MISC. section. Misc objects in trade for herps and herp stuff. What do you guys think?

Thanks,
Kim

Thats why theres EBAY.

it would be nice to be able to sell anything and everything where ever we choose. but lets be realistic here. this is a reptile site. how much more non-herp related stuff should we add to the site, till theres only a fraction left of forums pertaining to actual reptiles.

id say, sure go for it, assuming the site could charge a hefty fee for anyone wishing to advertise. maybe that way, we could get some bills paid around here
otherwise, keep the used cars in there respective magazines. etc...

lol I didn't mean we sell all our junk on here I just meant we could offer non-herp stuff for herps. It's still herp related. What the difference, we are still making deals invovling herps. Like I said Reptile Rescue does it pretty succesfully so why shouldn't the #1 herp site incorporate something similar. If you think it's a bad idea hey it's your call but there's nothing "unrealistic" about it when a site that's not even half as good as this one can pull it off.
What ever you think, it was just an idea.

Thanks,
Kim

BTW I noticed you guys complain about not being able to pay the bills alot. Maybe we could organize some type of fund raiser. I have done this successfully many times for the iguana rescue programs and raised alot of funds for them. I am sure we could do something similar here if this site is really that bad off.

I think it's because ppl get ....stupid, They start bashing prices, undercutting each other, bashing the seller, etc. It used to be that way and alot of the classifieds threads anded up like the general discussion threads

lol kim,

i hope i didn't come off like i was disposing of your idea, as that was not my intent.
its just that theres no way we can control non-herp related stuff getting traded for herps.
its just not realistic.
if someone offerred you cash, you would take it right? and then just buy the herps yourself....

therefore making it a free for all...

as for the fund raising, i think thats a great idea and best brought up with jeff if you would be interested in helping out.
i think if everyone just bought a photo account, that would be a good start, plus they would be getting something out of it.

Grants right imo about the misc for sale ads. The extra bandwidth alone for that is more money. Especially when ppl find out about it from other areas on the net...non herp ppl. That could mean more ppl coming here just for the sake of using our free ad spaces.

I do like the idea however. And i think it could work for everyone with only one stipulation. That Jeff be able to charge for it. So for instance...misc ads would cost you a couple bucks an ad to post....or buy say a package for the year etc.

It could be a possibility!! Just as Grant and Shane explained it would start to draw people for the wrong reasons etc, but it sure would be usefull at times you right....

As for complaining about not being able to pay for the costs etc, its really not complaining... The site isnt run off a 35$ web hosting account the server is several hundred USD a month and some months we get 1 photohosting account or 1 banner ad and a few photo account which is nowhere near the ammount to cover the costs... so far costs incurred is well over $4000 usd for the server bills alone in the last year... If you guys could afford to invest 4000$ USD a year into something that may break even or "maybe" make a profit one day and not really care then my hats off to you!! I just feel that a community of nearly 4000 members would have at least broke the server bills even each month but unfortunatly it hasnt... I dont complain unless its brought up like now, just letting you know why the people who know the costs would say something... Going by the current statistics at 3500 members at a average over the last 12 months of $150 a month (some more some nothing at all) We would need to have well over 1000 members to start to break even...

Member support or not I will continue to fund it and the site is staying up regardless so really its not complaining its asking members to give back if they feel they get alot out of the site, sell stuff in the classifieds, etc... If you sell a 300$ snake and make a profit of 50$ - 100$ from our classifieds, how hard is it to give 1$ back... it sounds corny but if 100 members have 1$ a month it would make a huge differance and I am sure 100 snakes are sold in the classifieds monthly anyways... There is nothing on this site that a member cant use that isnt free which you COULD upgrade and use on a better / differant level... Alot of these things like classifieds we could charge for but I dont beleive in charging for use of classifieds especially for someone who is selling 1 corn and they are forced to pay 100$ a year for a account... Its pretty silly... Sorry for the rant... time for work!!!
