For Choriona - pics of the females

Hey all!

Choriona and I have been bantering back and forth on PM's on ways of determining the different locales of female Panther Chameleons. As most of you know, the females tend to be a drab pinks and browns, while the males have the bright, flashy colours. It's easy to determine the locale of a male, but a little harder with the girls. I said I would privately forward over pics of the four different females in my collection for comparison, but I thought I would post publically to see if any of the other chameleon-gurus on this site had any brilliant ideas on how to do so.

This is "OFP" that I'm currently babysitting for Zoe. She is a Nosy Be and you can clearly see the blues on her body.

This is "NFP" Zoe's other female. She is a Rainbow Panther.

This is "Pink". She is a rescue of mine and according to the previous owners is a Nosy Be. I don't see any blue on her, even when she is not in a pissy mood.

And finally this is "Red" a Red Panther Chameleon. I got her as a baby and was hoping that she would turn out to be a male so I could determine the locale. Alas not.

I guess if you were buying directly from a reputable breeder, you would be able to see the parents of the female so you would know the locale. If you are buying from a pet store, or rescue you don't have that option.

Any thoughts on figuring out the girls?

To my knowledge, there is no reliable means to determine origin of female aside from DNA comparison. In this regard, you are at the mercy of the dealer. Even a reputable one is depending on the info supplied to them by the exporter, so there's a lot of room for inflatable claims.

Do your research and try to deal with trustworthy breeders. If in doubt, consult someone that may be able to shed some light.

Nice pics, Trace!

WOw I really don't like female chams usually, but "Red" is just gorgeous. Thanks for sharing those pics.

trace- is "pink" always that color?! wow. I'd have to say my panther looks like both "red" and Zoe's rainbow.
"Red" because she gets that pale white color on the base of her tail, and the bright peach horizontal stripe....and more distinct vertical bands that are only a dark color and never red, like the rainbow.
I promise pics soon, maybe monday.

No actually! She is normally ummmm pink! As you can see I'm terribly creative when it comes to naming my chameleons. Just now I went to grab a quick pic of her in her normal colouration and, of course, as soon as I opened her cage door... *poof* BLACK. This girl has got the worst PMS I've ever seen on a female.

If I had to pick, "Pink" in her normal colouration is similar to "NFP", which makes think she is a Rainbow and not a Nosy Be as I was told. But, as WM said, unless I go to the expense of DNA analysis, I'll never know.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

For all you "Red" fans... look what she gave me as a present today!

I'm very pleased with my little girl. She was filthy when she was finished packing up her hole, but she's had a nice long shower, a big drink, and she's back in her house sleeping away.

I thought this was a cute pic of my dirty girl.

Cheers!

Sweet pic! What a little darling. Very interesting patterns on her. Is she a freeroamer as well?

Cheers!

she is a partial free-roamer. (I don't trust her as much as my veilds.) She is in a 33gal terrarium, with lots of live and fake plants. She has a fogger under her too, that you can see. I want to move her out of that but it is easier to keep her humidity proper in there. I don't have the lid on most of the time, and there are shelving units with plants and stuff all above her, and I attached her lights to it for her. She also has a birdcage that I put her outside in almost every day this summer!

oh, congrats on the eggs, by the way! Hope you have good luck with those. Have you hatched out panthers before?

Thanks! I haven't hatched any yet. This is only my second clutch of eggs from Panthers, my first one being a clutch of 21 eggs from "Pink" laid earlier on this summer. Those should be due sometime towards the end of the year.

okay, sorry about the long wait, but now I have some more pictures of Prescious and her broad color range. (lol)

Here she is with her walking stripes on.

And here she is with her lighter pattern. I don't have one yet of when most of her stripes are gone.
