question for DOM

Hi Dom,

You know I have this rock righjut. well she is near 9 feet and she is a real pain in the *&*&. I can't take her out without getting bitten alot ( not funny when you see her mouth) and she is very very fast. Also she starts to attack me when I only open the cage. Is this just a phase like with burms or is she just getting very very bad. I only can take her out with one hook and a grabstick and she is so strong that she breaks out of the hook and grabstick..

what can I do to get her more tamed down?

well honestly you can not tame it. That is what rock's do. All you can do is keep it warm and feed it, put in a clean cage and appreciate the time you spend with it when you can.

Rock's, retic's and anacondas are just display animals. Sure we can get a nice one from time to time...but..a good persentege of the time you will get the more nevouse less handelable ones and if we choose to keep them then we need to be ready for all probable situation including not having a nice well tempermented snake.

I hope you have fun dealing with you rock and I am sure you will think of some way to get through this if you need some advice on how to house it diffrently or just how to get aroubd with out geting biten I am happy to try and help.

Rocks are NOTORIOUS for their mean tempers. You really SHOULD have read up on them BEFORE you got one.

Retics and anacondas are only display animals??? Tell that to the unknown large number of their owners that! Yes their are aggressive ones, but isn't there some in every known species?

I've yet to meet a retic with an "Aggressive" behavior, even the rumored ones Ive bought turned out to be real sweethearts.. As with the condas.. But thats just me.. Also, the way I see it all herps are display animals, What else can you do with them, play fetch? I mean, you can breed them, sure but I dont agree with the motive most breeders go by and I don't care to raise more than I want.. Xain

to me all herps are display animals also but a retic or rock or conda are not somthing you slap around your neck like a ball or BCI they have cages and tht is where they stay IMO.

And yes there is alwas the edgy ones in all animals but for a 4 foot bal to haule of and strike is nothing when your rock nearly breakes the glass just to get you out of his sight.

a snapy ball dosent scare me but I will run a good 10 yards when that snapy rock finds the week point in the glass LOL and come back later when it calms down a bit then i will work with. J/K

in other words you dont jump into large constrictors head first. They can be a hand full even the "NICE" one can have there off day.

Yes they are "display" animals to an extent. But not in the literal sense. You still interact with them, other than when cleaning. I still get my bigger ones out when i have time, even with working two jobs. Whats the point in owning them, if all you do is let them lie there. Even an aggressive animal can be handled or dealt with to some extent. Like Jeff said, be prepared to deal with the animal. Hey Xain, which part od OK you from. Near Bob or MIke?

You should interact with every animal to an extent, but no reason to over do it, ya know..
Also, I am about 45 minutes From Bob, and have chatted up with him, as for the Mike guy, I know several but noone to big into the large pythons or boas.. Got a last name? What part of Texas you from?

I totally agree that ANY snake is not entended, nor should be carried around on ones neck. But like my other post, one should be prepared , I guess is what Skin should have considered. And no, you can't compare a ball to a rock, in the severity of a bite. I agree.

Mike Wilbanks, he's not too far from Bob's. He is in with Bob on quite a few projects,shows,etc. Does a lot of dwarf retics,others and bp's. I'm east of Dallas.

well I knew about their behavor but I got this animal from someone who was very very affraid of it. I know that it is probably not a phase but I was just wondering if it could be a phase. I know how to keep them and I will keep her as long as she lives. But I won't be handeling her alot though

Then GOOD luck "taming" her down. Its not like you can talk to her to get her to like you. Gentle and deliberate handling has been proven to be pretty much the only way to tame down a snake. If you are not willing to do that, then you are out of luck my friend.

No matter what you do you will never have a TAME Rock but as Jeff said with out handling he/she you will not even have a SO SO
handling snake.

Make sure you have nice leather gloves when cleaning the enclosure.
