is the thermometer touching the ground over the heat pad? cause it might just be reading the heat from the lamp

It is about 2" above the floor and on the opposite side of the heating pad. I am using papertowels if that makes a difference?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like you are measuring 82 degrees on the end of your tank away from the heat, which means that the temps are going to be higher under the light/over the heating pad. For my leos, I have 85-88 on the "hot" side during the day. What does your thermometer read on the hot side?

I use a 75 watt infared for a 55 litre bin. It works alright I built these stackable screens that can raise the reflector up and down to controll the temperature. I also have probe thermometers so I can measure the temp of the center of the heated area (very important) using the ones you stick on the wall the temperature will say for example 90 F but the epicenter of the heat will be like 97 F , I had my set up like this and I was wondering why my snake was always on the side with the lower temp. Now everything is good!

I agree with Jay. If it's 82 on the cold side,t hen you're leos are going to cook! Is the thermometer, heat pad and clamp lamp all on the same side? You shouldn't have the heat pad on one side and the heat lamp on the other... you should put them all on one side, IMO. Also, you should have two thermometers; one for the warm side and one for the cool side.

I moved the themometer to the same side as the light and heat pad and it got up to 95 degrees so I turned it off. Should I go with a 40 watt bulb? is 95 degrees to hot??

was the thermometer directly on the floor? cause that's pretty low for a heat pad.. heat pads dont give a lot of radiated heat.. just direct heat (it's considerable cooler a lil bit away from it than it is if u touch it)
95 is a lil too hot.. i guess u can knock it down to 40 watts.. whatever will get u to a good temp

Well the best would be to have the termometer on the hot spot (directly on the floor) read the temp and post it here, do the same with the cool end
you should have 92-95 max as hot spot (basking rock) 88 hot, 82 cool during the day and 84 hot and 78 cool during the night, well
those are mines
