recommendations for a tortoise newbie

Anyone have a recommendation for a specific breed of tortoise for a newbie? I'm looking for one that doesn't get too big. What size enclosure would it need?

Thanks
Don

You're in New York. One of the best of all possible choices for a pet tortoise is an American. Not enough effort is being made to captive breed Box turtles in the States. They are cherished and bred all over Europe and in Canada. Habitat destruction and fragmentation along with collection for the pet trade have had a devastating effect on wild populations. Will we see the day when more Box turtles exist in captive collections outside the US than exist in the wild within their home country? Thank God many caring and farsighted conservationists, citizens and yes even politicians have protected these animals in several states and many conservation areas. There is lots of info out there on the net and in print to help you along. Please buy captive bred animals. They are healthy and not too expensive. Many wild caught animals will just die on you. Best of luck donskelly

Ok, I guess I'll say it.... Box Turtles are not tortoises.

But, what he has said about the North American Box turtles are true. Not enough people are breeding them to make up for the 1000's that are exported to other countries for their pet trade.

As far as a starter tortoise, I would say a Russian Tort. They don't get too big and are basically good for beginners.

Remember! Above all else, read everything you can find on any animal you plan on purchasing, and only buy captive bred animals. THey may cost a little more, but they are worth it.
