Desert females are pretty affordable too as they cannot be used for breeding. Sharp-looking snakes, if you're just looking for a pet. Normally females cost more than males though.
Fire is a nice basic morph too and not much more than a normal. For that matter, I think normals are pretty good-looking. Many people dismiss them as plain and breeders often have them running out of their ears (I got my normal girl thrown in for free with a banana cinnamon male that I had paid a pretty penny for). However there's nothing at all wrong with a normal if you find one that appeals to you.
I agree that you should go with what you like, within reason. I would love a panda pied but my pockets are not deep enough.
