New jumping spider (Hyllus diardii) :)

Hey everyone, so I've gone and got my first ever spider... A female sub adult Hyllus diardii... Up untill this point my girlfriend has flatly refused to have a spider in the house, but I seem to have worn her resolve down...

We picked this one up at the Doncaster IHS breeders meeting, and Rachel even paid for the spider and carried her around while we were there.... I was absolutely shocked!

Well here she is, I've named her "Crackerjack" as she moves like she's on crack, super fast and erratic... When she jumps it's like she teleports as its so fast.

Thanks! Honestly I've become fascinated by her! Apparently you have to build trust with them, quite smart too as their intelligence level has been compared to that of a small rodent.

That's insane, I had no idea invertebrates possessed that high a level of intelligence

Neither did I, but now I'm hooked on them after only 3 days Hahahah... It's amazing to watch her while she watches you and tries to figure you out...

If you sit with your hand next to the enclosure she will "ping" to your hand and walk around before "ping" n she leaps back home..

Every time she jumps I make a "ping" sound in my head, amuses me

You already know I like this spider Jamie! I showed it to Becky and even she said it was OK for an arachnid-quickly followed by 'you're still not having one though!'.

Great thing about a spider though is they're much easier to hide than a snake or lizard and I already have a ton of boxes she won't go in as they hold the crickets etc

.

Are there any decent care sheets for this species?

I havnt found any decent ones yet, all my info has come from talking to other keepers so far.

I see jumping spiders all over the place where I live (massachusetts) and I've been fascinated with them my whole life, they almost seem to teleport with how fast they move

We have zebra jumpers out in our back garden in the summer and I thought they were amazing but that wee thing is outrageous. I have to say mate I'm a bit green here at ya

I'm just now realizing you guys are from across the pond haha, I've heard good things about pet laws over there, is that true?

Depends on your definition of good! Yes you can own any non-venomous reptile you choose but this does mean that as well as some very good and capable keepers owning reptiles their ease of availability means there's an awful lot of complete idiots owning entirely inappropriate animals in entirely inappropriate conditions.

That's awesome! I live in Massachusetts, one of, IMO, the strictest states here in the U.S. Taxes up the wazoo and if I want to own certain animals, it's $100 USD and they can randomly check you're setup. Sucks ��

I wouldn't have a problem with paying for a "licence" or a charge to own certain species, nor would I have an issue with my setups being inspected.

Personally I'd prefer this, as the bad keepers and impulse buyers would be put off.

100% agree and indeed speaking to the better breeders and reptile shops they'd actually like this as they'd be able to charge a more appropriate price for an animal.
